My 66 Vespa 150 has the seedometer in Klm. I've used several different methods to get a mph conversion. I know it's not just straight conversion from klm to miles because of the 8" v. 10" tires I have. The other day, I taped a friends GPS to the scooter and got a reading quite different than that which I had been using. I would assume the GPS to be accurate, but just wondering how others make the conversion and what conversion factors you ended up using.

Thanks, Jeff

When you go from an MPH to KPH speedo or vice versa, i believe the drive gear has to change in the front fork. I could be wrong, though.

I had a Kmh speedo on my T5 and just put stickers on it over the "glass". after about 6mnths all that was left on it was 30mph but thats all we need over here.
Then it gave up the ghost and all the idiot lights gave up, even the back light. So My mate gave me one that has both mph n kph. I just swapped it out and it works like a treat.

If your asking about swapping from 8" to 10" wheels then thats another story and I dont have a clue srry Can't you just buy a speedo from a 10" wheeled bike. I know 8 n 10" worms are the same

My T5 has a kmh speedo, and my PX used to. 50 kmh is roughly 30mph, 90 kmh is roughly 55 mph, 100 kmh is roughly 62 mph...... My PX speedo was a straight swap, no need to change the worm gear. Not sure on older Vespas.

Mathematically, roll an 8" and a 10" wheel (preferably attached to a bike, with proper tire pressure) onto a measuring tape (like for sewing), measure the circumference of the entire tire.

Figure ratio of circumferences, that's your translation between 8" and 10".

Figure ratio of KPH to MPH (3/5 or something, right?).

That's all you need to do.

Problem is that if your speedo isn't accurate, say, because of a wrong pinion gear, this woun't mean poop.

I'd check the speed with a second GPS (straight line only!), and if they agree, make runs at 10, 20, 30, etc. MPH and mark where the needle rests on a piece of tape. Then you can make more permanent marks as appropriate.

The drive gear has nothing to do with km versus mph speedo. It's simply the face plate on the speedo.

That said, however, if you are running 10 inch wheels with a drive gear for 8 inch wheels, even the kmph reading is off. Best bet is simply "calibrating" the speedo with a GPS, as MDchanic suggests.

For what it's worth, simply multiply the kmh x 0.62 (or simply 0.6) and you have mph.

Somewhat of an overstatement. The speedometer drive gear for the scooter is probably set for 8"wheels. Thus, there will be an error due to the larger circumference of the wheels. They will turn fewer revolutions per mile, causing the speedo to read low. Actually, having the speedo in kph is not a factor.

The speedo needle stays in the same position regardless, and the spacing on the mph or kmph faceplate numbers is adjusted to match speed. I know there are not different speedo pinions for mph or kmph.

Aviator, what Eric and I are trying to get at it is that we're worried for JDuke's sake that his bike has done a tour in southesast Asia. The basic configuration is the classic telltale sign.

The restoration was done by Scooterworks.

It would have been real easy to allow myself to be tempted by the low prices on the Asian restorations, but I had read enough to know better. I have had the scooter for nearly a year, and am quite happy with it. I feel the restoration was well done and have seen no evidence otherwise.

I've never had a cycle or scooter either one, and I am having a ball with the Vespa. There are several (not quite local) groups and I'm looking forward to some group rides this year.

Your simplest bet, as stated above, is to simply use a GPS to determine where 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 mph is on the speedo and either commit that to memory or put instrument marking tape (about 2 mm wide) lines on the faceplate. Meanwhile, don't let this worry you to the point that it distracts you from enjoying riding in that beautiful part of the country. I put many a mile on my 62 VNB while stationed at Ft Chaffee in the 80's.
