~34,000 miles. Still smooth like silk. Or chocolate. Good chocolate, yeah that's it.

Hi. Just a quick update on my 600 mile notch. I have now done 3450 miles and no sign of the notch. Hopfully the dealer has set the bearing nuts correctly. I do grease the bearings evey 1000 miles with tractor wheel bearing grease (low speed). So hopfully (again) I will have many miles of notch free scootering.

My red 2009 500 had 46,000 miles and never got the notch
My black 2009 500 got it at 17,000 miles. 2 weeks in the shop waiting on parts, 1 day to actually install
On a side note the red one did get the busted piston from another thread at 35,000 miles

2015 Piaggio mp3 500
Steering notch 7000 miles, right in the centre. Pretty bad now and I'm attempting to claim under the Consumer Rights Act. Manufacturing or design flaw. I purchased the bike new from Fowlers in Bristol and it's less than three years old.
I can't see how this would be deemed a reasonable expectation for the headset bearings to fail on that mileage. I'm guessing I'll have a battle, will file via the small claims court if I don't get anywhere.
I'll let you know how it goes, hopefully Fowlers will see sense and find a way to provide the fix.

2016 MP3 500 sport. 4900 miles.
I start to feel the discomfort at low speed. I'm furious with such low miles and of course the scooter out of warranty.

Today's update from a seller in (name removed as requested) Bristol after a phone discussion. I did point out that in now way was I seeking a repair under a warranty (as this expired after 2 months) but that I was seeking repair under the customer rights act. I didn't believe it was reasonable for the headset bearings to fail after such a mileage (less than 8000).
Apparently the seller thinks that it's ok for this to happen which speaks volumes for their aftersales. I'm not too surprised though as suspect most piaggio suppliers would do the same.

The question is what next? Am I being unreasonable in my assessment, I'd really appreciate opinions here. I could try and file a small claims court judgement stating a manufacturing or design defect. thoughts?

to me,

Dear Mr ------

I have spoken to my manager, Chris Wellington, who has confirmed that unfortunately, as you know, your bike is no longer covered by the Piaggio warranty, which expires after two years (and also requires the bike to be servcied by a Piaggio dealer).

Although we would like to help, we are unable to repair your bike for free under a goodwill claim as we have not seen or serviced this bike since your first service, and the headrace bearings are considered a wear and tear item, so we do not consider this issue to be caused by a fault or oversight on our part in the workshop.

I spoke to Chris about the problems you have experienced finding a Piaggio dealer in your area, and he has checked and confirmed that Bridge Motorcycles in Exeter are a Piaggio dealer, so they might be able to help, or advise on the repair.

Best wishes,

You're going to have to stop name dropping the dealer.

Like, as in, edit it out of your posts.

This isn't the place to air out dealer grievances.

And yeah, it sucks to have the notch.

I have 3 MP3's, and learned a long time ago...
Pump them full of Grease and the chance of having this issue is minimal.
I mentioned this in my earlier post on this thread, all of mine were dry... Even my 2016 Sport.

I own a 2016 mp3 500 sport. As mentioned before, I started to feel the discomfort at low speed. The scooter has only 4900 miles. I lifted the 2 front wheels and bingo...the notch was there.
I removed all the Tupperware and started to unscrew the rings and here my rollers appeared... totally dried...god damn it... a 2016 model...really? you would think Piaggio learned from the past...
I greased the bearings, shifted their positions and now Iím fine.

MP3 400ie 2009
I had the same problem. good for me my freelance mechanic does home service... what he did was lift the front took out the wheels at the same time then disengage the part that holds the 2 wheels together.. once he did that he turn the left fork left and right to feel any notch or roughness but ite good. when he tried the right fork and Wala there it is he let me feel the notch when he turn it.. he told me no need to replace the bearing because the bearings piaggio used is good quality and they dont break that often. he said all he have to do is tighthen the top and forced high temp grease into it. he forced grease on the left bearings too. Only 20 mins work . Dealer told me they will replace bearing both sides and will take awhile to finish need to leave the unit in the shop.. thanks to this vespa mechanic im enjoying my MP3 400ie now.

note: What my mechanic did is it the same as the Gonzo tweak? if it is.. good job Mr. Gonzo.
