Finally added some tidy and well attached extraneous fuel, on three of our bikes which I've wanted to address for some time.

Extremely well made product. Typical gogogordy installation: over-engineered and Dremeled into submission! I don't know any other way

and neat, to boot! I will look into that solution too. Thank you for posting!
But ouch: they are expensive!

Question about the under-rack location: why so far toward the rear end? Wouldn't farther forward be a better weight position? Not possible? I'm sure you had a reason.

Arno-

Yes, they ARE expensive, but cheaper than a towing service or having family, or friend bring fuel to me out in the middle of nowhere Mojave or Anza Borrego, which nearly happened to me recently. They are so well made and engineered, I actually felt better (as well as broker) about the expenditure when I received them and evaluated them in person.

I actually only purchased 2 cans even though my pictures might lead to believe I have 4, and hardware for 3 different mountings...there is a "sale" price on the cans on the websitesite to save a few bucks on a pair....maybe some group buys if folks only need one each and then individual hardware.

In an attempt to obscure as little of the tail/brake light as possible, I wanted to mount it as tightly against the underside of the rack as possible, because of that, I had to slide it away from some other hardware integral to the rack being locked down and the soft topcase being nearly permanently attached to it with stainless eye-straps. In other words to avoid having to re-engineer everything going on on the upper side of the rack.

Besides, when filled that Rotopax can weighs in at just a skosh over 8 lbs....When we tour, she customarily puts her purse, some extra gloves, a point-n-shoot camera and a bottle of water in the bag, the sum total of all that cargo is no more than 20 lbs. Below the recommended 12 kgs. maximum limit.

Does anyone know if there is a way to mount one of these on the underside of a Vespa baby box mounting rack WHILE said baby box is attached? I am seriously thinking this would be a great sollution to my spare gas can carry woes. Thanks!

P.S. I know some will say "carry it in the baby box", but after a loosened cap incedent in the pet carrier (complete with melty flashlight), that seems too risky for me. PLUS, I have an item requiring all the baby box space.

After trip to Reno
I learned that a rider of my size, coupled with a full top-case, INCLUDING the 9 pounds of fuel I had "hidden" in there, made the scooter's penchant for wobble much more apparent.

I needed to distribute the load better, and decided there was a better place to carry my Rotopax....
A special bracket mounted to my new front rack, allows me to carry my Rotopax up front.

gogogordy,

you 've been riding a while with the rotopax at your back now, what is the carrier saying about so much weight? I thought it could only take 6kg (sorry for the metric, I'm Belgium, (yes the guys without government) and the rotopax filled gets already over 5kg.

I guess the carrier can take more but still feel a bit reluctant to attach it like you did on your first pic; what are your experiences so far ?

The topcase is listed at 12kg max capacity. The Rotopax filled and all the hardware mounted in there weighed about 6 to 7 kg so about half.

It was fine weight-wise but I relocated to the front for a couple of other reasons and prefer it there for the additional space in my topcase, less penchant for wobble, and the extra weight out front actually settles the ride a bit on my Vespa.

I hope that answers.

gogogordy,

I was actually meaning this setup of yours:

it's about that kind of rack (I have a topcase on it but the actually max wait applies to the rack). What's you're experience with that one please ,

Thats my wife's scooter and the soft bag mounted to the rack weighs about half of what the hard, Vespa case does. That said, I agree the weight acutally applies to the rack more so than the case.

She hasn't had any issues with the fuel mounted there, and has run the bike fully loaded with cargo AND fuel back there without any issues.

Her Vespa is set-up with a front rack too, which gets loaded real throughly when she travels. It's my suspicion that the extra weight out front helps negate the extra weight of the fuel "out there" and neutralizes any handling issues.

Mechanically the rack is quite fine to accomodate the 12 or so pounds of fuel as well as what she loads into the bag above it.

Again, we've had no issues with her set-up despite several long trips with it mounted that way...Death Valley, Reno, and the deserts near Palm Springs.
We alway carry spare fuel when we venture out.
