You know that by making that proclamation that somehow, probably of a mystical cause, you're going to lock your keys in the trunk and your release cable is going to snap when you tug on it.

J.
and this is why that method should be avoided

When I bought my scoot from someone, it came with this trick already available where I just pull on something and it unlocks the seat latch.

Not that I have locked my key inside. But if I was out doing something to the scoot and didn't have my key ... I could still get into the locked seat.

Which I've found to be a valuable asset to have just in case I needed it, to get my keys out of the seat storage area.

But what if any ... could someone do, if they were to get inside the seat storage area?

You may send me a PM, if you don't want to post that answer here.

I'm still new at learning about the MP3, especially adding things to it to better help my riding and enjoying this awesome scoot.

emillio, you have Honda Gyro too! How fast is yours? And I like the look of a Madass, how to you like it? It's a German designed & Chinese made cute little motorcycle(not a scooter), is it reliable?

Well, PM me please, I guess. I am SO careful with my keys. Still, if I don't ask, it's bound to happen. If I DO ask, it will NEVER happen.

locked my keys!
Hi everybody!
I bought a 2007 Piaggio MP3 yesterday. Got home and was so excited to show my wife the different compartments... I was showing her the jacket that came with the bike and then when I was ready to show her the rest I realized I have no key!!!
Would someone please help me?
I have everything in the underseat compartment! Spare key too!
Thanks so much in advance!

If you mean an added trunk there is no short cut. Locksmith needs to use a lock pick and spring steel.

Actually, If the member means their Top-case.......then tell the locksmith to use a air wedge between the two halves. Now use a suitable grab tool to access the keys. Easy!

Because Piaggio use 4 different key millings on the top-case, some are harder than others to pick open. More so if you are not used to opening Giobert or Zadi locks.

Separation is the key

Cheers

Dead Battery
Hey Everyone. I was wiping off the MP3 today and noticed the trunk wasn't closed fully. Of course I closed it and then I realized the battery was dead. So I can't open the trunk or seat with the key. Can someone PM me the solution? Looked in the book and it wasn't helpful at all - use the key to get in the trunk. Hmm, no battery, switch doesn't work. Much appreciated!

Use the key open the rear door by turning the key the opposite way of opening the fuel door. Reach in and find the cable end of the saddle release. Move it to the left to release the seat.

I'm an idiot. I thought they were crazy in the manual, but that would be me! I don't think I've opened the trunk that way since I bought it. Thanks! Love this forum.

Could someone please PM me with the solution to this? I actually have my keys but the trunk is stuck shut. I turn e key and nothing!! My purse and phone are in there but luckily I had my house keys and vespa keys on me thank goodness. I did break my blue key tho trying to turn it too hard.

I tried with a coat hanger and screw driver but couldn't get it.

I'm driving to the service center in the morning but it can't hurt to find out the solution!

Thanks!

Opening the saddle on a MP3 is totally different than the scoots you have listed in your profile. To get info on a LX or GTS do a search limited to the General forum

Just before going on a month long trip I decided to do the prudent thing and connect my MP3 battery to a trickle charger.

And to be even more ahead of the curve, I decided to remove my battery and store it in a safe place while it kept fully charged.

And, to show what a total idiot I REALLY am, I closed the seat on my now battery-less scooter.

Ooops.

The seat and trunk latches are electronically actuated. No power...then no way to open them with the ignition switch or the buttons.

Like everyone else it appears, my first line of action was to PM jimc and beg for help.

While waiting his response, I did the non-idiot thing and read the whole dialogue and found the easy solution. Thanks for posting it, it is really silly to keep this a secret for fear that the bad guys are going to swarm down and steal our rain jackets.

Here's how I did it...
1) Reach under the tupperware on the left side, near the kickstand area. There's only one spot where you can slide your hand in a small gap.

2) You'll feel some wires (leave those alone) and something that feels like a small co-ax cable like you have on your TV cable box. That's the housing for the rear trunk latch.

3) Firmly pull down on this cable until you hear the rear hatch open.

4) From inside the rear hatch you have access to the seat latch and, for dummies who took out their battery, the battery cables.

Well, You could also read the manual and use your keys to open trunk (Yes, there is also pure-mechanical way to do this, and its much, much easier than what you just described). RTFM!

With the scooter battery removed, I tried opening the trunk with the key in the ignition, it didn't work. Believe me, I tried. A lot. And I've done it many times before with the battery installed and it worked as advertised. The fuel door wouldn't open either without the battery installef. I've not yet dealt with the trunk/fuel filler door system, so my direct knowledge of how they work is limited.

Can someone say for certain that the trunk and filler door release is non-electric? Or does it have a non electric backup system that functions by turning the ignition? I know it typically is electrically assisted (by some solenoid, I assume) because I can normally open the trunk by pushing a button on the handlebar cover...clearly an electronic function.

The fuel door is totally mechanical. The pet.carrier door is covered by both a electric servo and a manual cable. You open the fuel door by pushing the key in and twisting to the right. The pet door is the same only turning to the left.

Getting your keys out of the trunk.
On my 2007 mp3ie I can open my helmet compartment by firmly hitting it below the Piaggio logo. You can then reach in and up to find the trunk release or actually reach the keys.

And some definitions (as I understand):
Per door --> back compartment / back trunk.
Trunk --> under the seat compartment / underseat trunk.

If mechanical opening (by pushing and twisting key to the left) not working, then you have something damaged and need to visit service, but this should not happened because "pet door" and "trunk opening" are completely independent mechanisms.

Do you have a MP3 500 LT model?

If you do there is a workshop manual at
http://www.wotmeworry.org.uk/manuals/Gilera%20Fuoco%20-%20MP3%20500/MP3%20500%20LT%20Sport-Business%20Workshop%20Manual.pdf

The electrical section relevant to fuses pages 81 and 82 say that the seat opening switch is covered by fuse number 12 which is in the fuse block down where your toes go.

Also see page 398 which shows the routing of the cables

European (UK) 500 is not US 500.
He has MP3 not Fuoco

We seem to be suffering some confusion or at least I am - this thread is about people who have locked their keys in their MP3's so called trunk/pet carrier. There are ways of breaking into that

I'm not sure that is your problem.

The compartment at the rear of the bike is what I cannot open.
I've since tried one method and heard the noise of the mechanism but the latch will not release.

Is there something in the back that's being squashed and pushing against the lid? Try pushing the lid in as you operate the mechanism.

Update your location to what part of the UK you in and maybe a local will come by and open it in exchange for a pint.
