After some discussion amongst the moderators, we've decided to re-open this thread. Just to be clear, the thread wasn't locked because of the content, it was locked because it was becoming contentious.

That said, I've cleaned up the thread somewhat in an attempt to keep it ever so slightly on the clean side of classy. Yes, I've made arbitrary decisions about what to keep and what to get rid of. Some of you will disagree. Some of you will even accuse me of being sexist. Since I've been accused of much worse things (recently, even) this doesn't phase me in the least.

Like it or lump it. Threats to disassociate with the forum will be met with the sound of the door slamming shut behind you.

Guidelines: Historic Vespa pinup art is definitely allowed and preferred. Historic photos (movie stars, etc) posing with Vespas are allowed. Piaggio promotional materials (even risque ones) are allowed. Non-nude women posing on Vespas are allowed. Bikinis are allowed.

Not allowed: Nude photos. Paddock girls. Excessive crotch shots. Beefcake. Any photos of Jimmy in his pajamas.

(You ladies are welcome to start a beefcake thread if you like... but you'll be asked to keep things on the tasteful side there as well).

Well then, Jesse, you have spoken. It's your web site after all. Who cares if this thread has nothing at all to do with vintage scooters, right?

We, at Bar Italia, are going to do some serious thinking and figure out whether our input is actually necessary on this Web site. It's clear that there are a few who don't care for our contributions, as evidenced by their after-the-fact participation in this ridiculous and very, very offensive thread.

Like you pointed out, Jesse, this is your Web site. I'm sorry you came to the conclusion to keep open this sexist and disgusting thread. As a female mechanic in the two-wheel world, I am inured to that same sentiment: that what I feel as a daily rider and a mechanic is unimportant because of my gender and that I need to "suck it up" and accept that many male scooter riders will never respect what I do. I just thought you were a little more progressive than that. I was wrong, and that makes this a sad day.

Let me be the first to encourage you to stick around Bar-I, your help is clearly appreciated..

Piaggio chose to use the image below(as well as many above) to promote Vespa motorscooters... This is a website celebrating Vespa motorscooters... You have a business that revolves around...Vespa motorscooters... Sorry, sincerely I am, but I just don't get it..

Many channels(threads) to tune in to here, I stick to the tech mostly, and just tuned in here to see what the lock was all about..

Sorry I have to step in ! Vespa scooters have been promoted for use by women since day one . They have always put class to the nude when used they have always showed women as an independent go about town type. The calenders have always showed very classy women . I think its sad that some people are offended by the human body . The people of this thread with class good for you and jess good for you too. Thank you for keeping this thread classy as keeping to the long tradition that has attracted many to this form of transportation . We all know what happens with any none monitored sites they run away from you and become very chaotic .

For me a bit of harmless fun. We don't have to look, skip over it. The best thing about these little scoots is the variance in people they attract from one extreme to the other.

We are not always going to agree but we can always ignore and move on.

Cheers

I've gotten a lot of flack over the years from the vintage community for the supposed "heavy-handed" moderation that takes place here on MV. It's true that we remove or lock threads when they start spinning out of control, though I generally don't expect people who have never run a website to understand the rationale for doing so. So it comes as something of a surprise to find myself on the opposite side of that criticism, taking flack for not removing a thread.

I refuse to be held hostage in order to have the privilege of your participation here.

I refuse to be bullied into accepting other people's agendas.

I refuse to pretend that 60 years of Vespa history in the form of pinups and Piaggio marketing material never existed or is somehow so toxic that it must be shielded from public view.

I refuse to make any kind of guarantee that nobody anywhere will ever be offended by anything on this website, for to do so would reduce the website to the lowest common denominator.

I refuse to believe that the very existence of a single thread amongst almost 70,000 threads on a single website in a sea of millions and millions of websites is of such paramount importance that the world will end if I don't remove it.

I refuse to submit to the threats of you or anyone else. Go ask Randall or Agius what I do when presented with a threat. Your behavior earlier in this thread was at least half of the reason I re-opened this thread.

I refuse to be backed into a corner.

I refuse.

Let me just be clear on this point: this doesn't give anyone license to post porn. Even tasteless stuff that doesn't qualify as "porn" (paddock girls are a good example) will be removed. Pictures that don't have a vintage scooter in them will be removed. Any gratuitous cheesecake will be removed if it doesn't relate directly to vintage scooters.

Hey, i wonder if it is the crappy weather (except maybe in California) that causes people to get bored and stop working on their scooters...I know snow and temperatures in the 30s and below for weeks have stopped me working on my '74 Rally...we definitely need those with skill & knowledge to stick around for when the work starts back...

i don't know if this has to turn into a thread of comments, but......bar italia is a steadfast true beleiver in the preservation and holder of vintage scooters(they like other vintage things but scoots are their bag)......they are also very active in handing out free advice in the direction of a preservation....you see its kinda like this......the preservation of an item goes hand in hand with the preservation of that time or feeling or scene.....it is a culture of the art not just the art or item.....this thread, with my help, was or had long before reached a cheapening of what the item is......marcel duchamps bicycle wheel and stool would look cheap presented with a girl in a bikini and her a-- hangin out(or back flap jammies)......all i can say is that when you walk into the baritalia shop you are free to stand and touch items of preserved art that i beleive duchamp would be proud of(he's my fav).....this is a site of scooter enthusiast who get carried away(me as well) and if we continue to show lack of respect for an item(scooter) than the preservationist with the helpfull info will go away because they just don't have the time to help those who arn't askin for it........jess can do what he wants with this post but i felt the need to speak up before us fools have no one willing to help us....cheers to the bar, the greasys, the patricks, the jims, the professors, the aviators and so on

i for one have enjoyed this thread
especially the old scooter poster and promo shots
as a collector of all things scooter its great to have some of the old stuff available

i understand why rude and lude should not be allowed as i sometimes have my 12yr old daughter with me whilst browsing the site.

bar italia wrote that the whole thread is idiotic

i dont believe it is

i see it as a collection of photographs from calenders and posters over the years that show the change in fashions and lifestyles

most of these pictures are displayed on the walls of most scooter museums i have visted

i mean to offend no one by this post
just my thoughts

Sexist? When? Answer: Not then, it was the norm.
Everything in perspective.

I'd like to add my $.02 as one of MV's women moderators. Jess and all the moderators have always worked to make MV an equal opportunity forum, a place where women riders (and wrenchers) are acknowledged and treated with respect.

That said, we prefer, and appreciate it, that the members 'self police' as a rule, rather than having us moderate with a heavy hand. By and large this particular thread has done so. Not everyone may like the vintage Vespa cheesecake genre, but a fair number of women-- including some with glowing credentials on the anti-sexist battlefields-- count themselves as fans.

Some models from this era with far more risque portfolios are seen as pro-sex feminist heroines-- Betty Paige, anyone? [Yes, we will remove those images if you try to post them here! ]

Bar Italia, it would be great to have you stick around. I recommend my own policy regarding threads that I find irritating-- I just don't read them!

Below, my kitchen clock, which was also my avatar on MV at one point.

You know you're a Vespa nut when you're only looking at the Vespas to see what models they are and ignoring the women altogether.

There are plenty of fashionable gorgeous ladies riding Vespas in the streets of NYC so I guess I have my fill of Vespa ladies in real life. Also my gorgeous French girlfriend rides a Vintage Vespa

Phew, having been a lurker for a while now, I just read this thread and felt compelled to respond.

Some of the pics are more saucy than others but all leave a little to the imagination, so it's not really sexist but just a product of the time in which the pics were created. For instance the older advert pics are not as realistic as the later ones which involve real ladies, but there is nothing in them to crack off about.

Well done Jess for not bowing down to the polictically correct nanny-staters who would have us all kow-towing.

I admire your refusal to be backed into a corner and stand by you in solidarity.

There are some great archive pics in this thread that are part of history.

More power to your elbow.
