Third anniversary today of finding Freddo dumped starving and freezing in a parking lot. He's been well over six pounds in weight for ages, eats and shits like a horse, and is a truly most remarkably well-behaved and communicative dog. Keeps our feet warm at night, too.

Has it been that long already?

Doesn't seem like it.

Glad to hear he's still doing well.

That dog won the lottery! I still feel all warm and fuzzy whenever I think about this story. I honestly don't know who is luckier; you guys or the dog!

Yesterday was the 5th anniversary of finding Freddo - and he's going from strength to strength. Now over 7.5lb!

His carrier is also a rucksack - "No dogs on this trail"? - we'll see about that:

That's great jimc. All it takes is love and caring with possibly some help from the vet to get things heading in the right direction.

Aww. Hi, Freddo! Missing you and the cats (and maybe even Jim, a bit).

It still makes me smile re-reading this pronouncement from Jim from early in this thread:
Quote:
I have to put it on record that I don't 'take' to 'toy dogs' - they've been bred to a miserable size, and are often horrid yappy spoilt brats. Also there's no way he's staying here long term (this is a cat-only household).
You were a marked man from the get-go... you just didn't know it. Still not sure who is luckier; you guys or the dog.

So now it's ten years on from when we found him. So he's somewhere between 15 and 17 years old! He has the typical small dog congestive heart problems, so is on meds twice a day, but he does love the homemade peanut butter and oatmeal pill-pockets they are contained in.

He's found the perfect place to travel in the VW Westfalia, and he's now travelled through all the western half of the US several times:

His tongue hangs out because he has few teeth left to keep it in. ;)

This is the first I've tripped over this thread... cute dog! My chihuahua Papi is somewhere around 17, we have no clue, got her in '13 and she was old and mostly toothless then. Either way, best companion I've ever had (yes, my wife knows I feel this way).

The dogs find you... not the other way around.

Wow. It's been that long?

We had our Chloe for 17 years from the time she was weaned. She died in my arms at 4am local time on April 2 2018. There was never any indication that there was anything wrong. Was taken to the Vet at least yearly for the regular vaccinations.

Loved the pictures especially the one with the tongue. All Chihuahuas must have more tongue that their little mouths can hold.

I was friendless, other than my wife, till December 12th 2019 when we were chosen by a rescue. He's a Yorkipoo, at least that's what the Vet thinks. Estimating that he's 2 1/2 now. Right now he's laying at my feet under the computer desk.

I've been away from Modern Vespa it seems like forever. This was the first post I came across and it made my day.

A belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

Rescue is the way to go! So many dogs, puppies, cats and kittens just unwanted or dumped at a shelter and the wonderful people who match them to a good home.

Sometimes I think we're the lucky ones, who get the companionship of a dog.

This is Biki. She was a fight ring "target dog", the fighters would practice on her. Physically she's beat up, emotionally she's a snuggle monster. She loves the other dogs in the pack. No idea how she trusts them after her experience.

No clue what "breed" she is... we call her a "little brown dog", 35 pounds of chub!

Going with his Old Man status, Freddo is now on Viagra! 5mg twice a day.

There is a reason for this of course, as along with his congestive heart failure (lung problems) he now has pulmonary hypertension. That was another "Don't look at the bill, just get out the credit card" moment at the heart specialist.

This all came about when he started fainting at the slightest exertion a couple of days ago. Now he's perfectly happy again, full of beans.

Last night we had to take Freddo into the emergency vet to say a final goodbye. His time had come, it'd been a fight between his heart medication and his kidneys, which finally gave out.

Those who have been through this will know the heartache, and the happy memories that bring quivering smiles through the tears.

Jim, I've never seen this thread, it started the year before I joined MV, but reading the 6 pages, going from Xmas miracle to little Freddo's demise fair brought a tear to my eye.

Thanks to you and Kristin for doing the most decent of things for this Good Boy all those years ago

Sorry to hear of your sad news Jim and thank you for sharing with us your journey with Freddo. Because of you and your partner, you were able to give him 10 happy years. He was a very fortunate dog.
