This morning we got way behind what was planned because one of the cats seemed oddly under the weather and had to be dropped off at the Vet's to be looked at. Eventually we got around to the only dog-walk of the day, and when about 100yds from the walk's end, crossing a church parking-lot, we spy a tiny strange looking creature at the far end. Luckily I was there, as I could keep hold of the dog (a huge, powerful Afghan hound) at a safe distance while K went to investigate.

It turned out to be a tiny dog, just recognisable as a Chihuahua, tottering about beside a cardboard box. Yep, it had been dumped - but inside the box there was a blanket and food, and the box had had holes made in it for ventilation. But the poor dog - dribbled with diarrhoea - was all skin and bone, the spine and ribs sticking right out, no sign of any stomach, and nails about 2cm long - far longer than the tiny paws.

So straight off to the Vet with this one. No question, do the full Monty. Its temperature was too low to register on the normal pet thermometers (turned out to be a shade over 91F when it had warmed up a bit) - a neutered male, probably middle-aged, suffering from long-term starvation. Ours not to reason why it got like that, or who dumped it - we can never know the circumstances, but it seems a sad thing to do when there is always the night-time 'no questions asked' drop-off for unwanted animals available around here.

It must have been dumped just minutes before we got there - the weather has been wet here over the last day, and the box was dry, even the bottom of it sitting on damp tarmac. So it was serendipity that the cat mentioned above had to be taken in and we were there to rescue this tiny thing.

If this dog had got wet (very short hair) and stayed out one night, it would surely have succumbed to the cold.

Now newly-named 'Frosty' he seems much more alert as he's warming up and getting re-hydrated - seems to have a really sweet nature. He's staying in overnight, but then we'll be looking after him at home until well enough to be put up for adoption.

Anyone want a small dog for Christmas life?

Jim, good on you! By the way his ribs are showing, it is obvious that this poor dog has been starved. I just can't fathom how people can treat animals like this. You are a good soul for getting this poor creature the help that he needed. The karma fairy will surely light upon your shoulders.

Yep - that's it for your reputation as a curmudgeon. Thank you for stopping and taking care of this little guy - hopefully someone local can adopt him.

Unfortunately you don't understand what a curmudgeon really is. Jimc is ALL heart!

One view, almost fits....

What is a Curmudgeon anyway?

A curmudgeon's reputation for malevolence is undeserved. They're neither warped nor evil at heart. They don't hate mankind, just mankind's absurdities. They're just as sensitive and soft-hearted as the next guy, but they hide their vulnerability beneath a crust of misanthropy. They ease the pain by turning hurt into humor. . . . . . They attack maudlinism because it devalues genuine sentiment. . . . . . Nature, having failed to equip them with a servicable denial mechanism, has endowed them with astute perception and sly wit.
Curmudgeons are mockers and debunkers whose bitterness is a symptom rather than a disease. They can't compromise their standards and can't manage the suspension of disbelief necessary for feigned cheerfulness. Their awareness is a curse.
Perhaps curmudgeons have gotten a bad rap in the same way that the messenger is blamed for the message: They have the temerity to comment on the human condition without apology. They not only refuse to applaud mediocrity, they howl it down with morose glee. Their versions of the truth unsettle us, and we hold it against them, even though they soften it with humor.

That's for sure.

[EDIT] I guess I misunderstood curmudgeon too. Based on the definition above, it's not such a bad thing after all. Glad to have the curmudgeon back.

Thank you Jim! Clap emoticon And my best to Frosty.

It's so hard to understand. Here it's considered OK for a dog to spend the entire winter outdoors in a straw filled doghouse on a ten foot chain. The poor bastard across the street cries in the night all winter. Especially on the below zero nights. I despise those neighbors....

Thanks Jim, for saving an innocent life and for making my day. It's been a month since I broke my collarbone and I'm still in substantial discomfort. Last week, I had to put down my beloved Golden Retriever Lucy after thirteen and one-half years. And then I open MV and read of your good deed. I could be dwelling on the asshole who could do this to a defenseless dog but I prefer to toast you sir with a Percocet and a martini. Cheers and well done!

One of my pugs was found wandering the streets of Vegas in July. How these little monkeys survive is beyond me.

Glad people stop for them - it makes the world a better place.

That's a great deed, good on ya! Lucky for him you happened by at the right time. And just before Christmas no less - who could do that to an animal; probably their pet?!

I see no way that you are giving this little one up...I'll bet you're already researching how to bring him back to England. He would look good sticking his head out of a custom cut-out in your topcase. Razz emoticon
