Hello out there. My 2006 Piaggio BV 500 engine sounds fully powered. The battery is fully charged, all the breakers are good of course, Vespa replaced the defective fuel line a year ago, but the engine won't turn over, and I only had it sitting for two weeks. Someone said it may be the caruerator starter? Any ideas?

Well it may well be the caruerator but it is difficult to be sure given your engine sounds fully powered. I can only suggest you take it to a dealer in one of the 3 States you live in and get the electrics diagnosed.

Your BV500 is fuel injected: Not carburated. Squeeze both of the front brakes separately and see if the brake light is working. If the light works on one but not the other, see if the scooter will start when you pull the one that works the light. If the light works with both and the engine won't turn over, you may have a bad battery.....or it could be something else in the electric system or a stuck starter bendix.

Thank you
Could it also be a bad spark plug?

possible. a good way to check is to remove the spark plug and then plug it back into the plug cap , lay it on engine so you can see the electrode end and away from the cylinder. turn key on and push starter button, watch the electrode end and you should see blue spark. if the spark is any other color like orange the plug is probably bad.

I have no idea what this might means. The engine won't start but" sounds fully powered"? You mean it turns over but doesn't fire when you press the starter? The more description and symptoms the better.

Yes, exactly that. The engine sounds strong when I'm trying to start it up, but it doesn't sound like it fires or ignites. The battery is fully charged.

I guesse I could try replacing all the spark plugs

Could possibly be the EMS control unit? or more likely a spark plug?

Not the same as my scooter, but helpful

Is your kickstand down or not all the way up?

If the kickstand sensor, thinks that the kickstand is down but not up, it attempts to start but it never starts running.

Check the kickstand and make sure it is all the way up.

If it is, check the kickstand sensor because if the bike thinks the kickstand is down it won't start.

O.K., I get it now. You engine turns over but won't start. I thought from your initial description that it wouldn't turn over.
It could be the spark plug or a bad fuel pump.............or something else. If it's turning over, it's not the kill switch or your kickstand because they wouldn't let the engine turn over (attempt to crank).

Okay -

I own a BV500.

I just went out, and with the kickstand down, attempted to start the bike. I squeezed the break and pushed the starter and it cranks but does not start.

So it cranks, with the kickstand down.

Belkwinith: My bad. I used to have a BV500 and I mistakenly thought that it wouldn't crank with the stand down. Since that is the case, his switch at the kickstand could be defective. Again, my bad and thanks for the clarification.

My bv200 will not do anything if you try to start it with the sidestand down. Either will my Honda Reflex.

The OP needs to check for spark first then to see if the scoot is getting gas - after that it's time to call in the pros.

Have you tried twisting the throttle just a tad when trying to start it?

Belkwinith,
You must have a rare BV500. The the manual says both the kill switch and the kick stand act as off switches. You shouldn't be able to grind the starter with the kick stand down. I just went to the garage and tried to start my BV500 with the stand down. Nothing, nada, not even a click. I also noticed that with the kick stand down, the yellow engine light does not come on either.

.

It sound to me like either a bad sparkplug/sparkplug lead/cap... or no fuel getting through.

Are you able to eliminate either or would you like the good folks of MV to talk you through how to do this??

No-one has asked yet - what does the immobiliser LED do when you switch on? Cranking but not giving any hint of starting can be a duff aerial/decoder. Not a usual occurence, but I've had it twice on my bikes over the years.

bv 500 not starting
All good suggestions. Check that the connector on the plug wire is securely attached to the spark plug. Make sure that when your fuel line was replaced, that it really was replaced with a better material line and that proper clamps were installed on that line. The clear lines eventually split.
