I've had a horrible morning.
First rain of the season, No prob. That's what the other car is for.
My wife took the keys. No prob. I can just leave early, change clothes and get all my gear.
Garage flooded because asphalt was just redone. Not leaving early.
Now I have to fish everything out, leave, and oops, there goes my cushion.
Get to work safely. Open seat, close seat.
And NOW I realize I left my keys in the seat.
Can someone PM me please?
I'm sorry for another one, but I need the instant alert a new thread can bring.
I has a sad.

Get the red key out of safekeeping, and use it.

That's no good if he's stuck at work.

To open the seat (or at least the 'trunk' on an MP3) on a 500 without a key, you need to find the cable running to the lock and give it a downward tug. You can find the cable behind the left-hand rear panel, about halfway along and up near the seat rim - it can be seen from underneath. Grab it and pull firmly down, you will hear the lock click open. HTH.

No, he's at home, trying to leave for work.

Yeah, I'm at work, no spare key here. To clarify before I go try this out in the rain, this'll work on a 400 to get into the seat?

It'll open the trunk - and from there you can pop the latch for the seat, or reach in to grab the keys.

Get the red key out of safekeeping, and use it.
but put it back when you are done.

true story.

I lost my keys, and after searching everywhere I grabbed the red key from it's safe spot.

Checked the trunk, no keys.

Went back in the house, getting panicked now because I'm starting to run late and I hate it when I lose things. I went straight to the bedroom to check one more place. Suddenly I realized I no longer had the red key.

I still can't find it, but it is someplace in my house. I must have set it down somewhere, but I still have not found it.

My key ended up being stuck under the liner of my helmet

Yup - I can confirm it works on a 400. I just did it last night. Look under the left panel right below where your butt would be - it's the one that doesn't look like an electric cable. It actually opens my seat compartment.

Thank you guys, it worked and the day was salvaged at least a little bit. Still have a flooded garage to go home to, THAT'S gonna be fun.
I'll delete the thread tonight but wanted to give thanks.
Be well, everyone.

No need to delete - with luck it'll help someone else in trouble.

Thanks Guys and Gals, I assume, for the opening procedure to get under the seat. It was a panic time. It was something that would never happen to me. LOL

I know its an old issue for many of you but...
Tried the key as many know that doesn't work apparently without the battery (which is still odd since i can hear the darn cable doing something?). Fiddled with that 30 minutes with my son to no avail. Got in my jammies and hopped into my warm bed on a snowy night, searched for more answers til I found this thread thanks to jimc posting in another.

Could not let the issue wait til morn, off with the mammies and back to my fleece and freezing garage. Looked under left 'fender' and only saw one large wiring and the white plug for the alarm, no cable. Hunted on both sides, clicked key again to try and Locate cable. Left buttcheek, you say?

Maybe someone has said it earlier and i didn't see - for me i had to remove the 5 inch cover sitting vertically with a single phillips screw, look up inside by laying on my back. There are 4 lines held together with a zip tie, i did not remove the tie but separating the single cable (like a bicycle shift line, hard where the others were softer) was a bugger. 5 minutes of fumbling with a regular screwdriver to separate it from the rest, with skinned knuckles later, tug down and up pops the back gate. Gently slide left under roof of that area as manual states and the seat latch is open.

Btw, i keep my manual inside the helmet storage area, so when that's locked i'm dependent on these forums. Will be looking for a diff location. Also found a sMall access panel removeable that i plan to drill a hole in to poke my tender cord thru, once i replace battery with lithium ion for longevity. Would not have cured this issue tho, since tender does not charge a dead battery, maybe stronger ones do? Allows one to charge w/o leaving compartment lights on however. Hope this helps the next poor sucker. Btw bmw cycle batteries are 10 times harder to access, if that helps!

Thanks for all the help on these forums!!

If you have the key in your hand, You can pop the trunk the same way you do the gas filler door. Just push down and turn the key the other way.

If you've locked your keys in the bucket... (BTDT) have someone kick you real hard. then repeat after me.

"Never put your keys under the seat for any reason."

Unfortunately I am not able to pop open either the gas or the back lid from my key manually, been that way since I got this little scoot a year ago, its on my list to figure out. Acts like the cable is stretched or something, i can hear something trying but neither latch releases. I'm sure its been posted in these forums earlier, just looking for te to troubleshoot. Until then I have to pry open gas with fingernails, it comes up easily.

Thx

As others stated use the spare key, anyway, my comment is not answering your question but as others did but my is an advice so people don't fall into this, what I did is make a copy of the key (without the electronic features: just the metal key) and put it in your wallet, then if this happens, just open it with that key that was in your wallet! and here you go..... as they say the Need is the mother of all inventions!!!!! I locked my keys several times in the storage area.....

I had the exact same thing happen on my Buddy when I took her to the DMV to get registered. I put my key in my purse, put my purse in the pet carrier, put the seat down and that was that. Ended up prying the seat up and, surprisingly, didn't ruin anything. Sometimes the scooter gods are benign.
