Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of purchasing a Vespa from my friend, 4T 50CC ET4 Y Reg, but there just some things I'd like to know.

1. I've had a chinese bike before and many models are the basically the same and parts are interchangeable, is the 50CC ET4 similar to any other models.

2. What mod's/upgrades is there, is there any way to derestrict to get a bit more speed? Also a big bore kit, what type would I need?

3. Is there anywhere that I can find a Owners Manual (not haynes) even a service manual?

Thanks, any help is appreciated

Tom.

Tom,

It's a dog! http://modernvespa.com/forum/topic7428

If speed is your thing and you want a 50 get a two-stroke or see if you can find a GTS125 or even an old two-stroke 125.

If on the other hand your friend's 50 is all you can stretch to there is nothing wrong with the 50 as such, but you wont get much speed out of it but it will make you mobile.

when i say speed, i meant like 40-45 just so it's not dangerous.
because no one goes 30 on a 30 road do they and when people see L plates they overtake even if your doing or going over the speed limit.

the scooter is cheap, getting it checked over before buying obv. but not spending more than 100 on it so not really fussed, just want something a bit more stylish than my baotian

Disclaimer I don't know anything about 50 cc Chinese scooters but is your Baotation restricted? Ie. Is the max speed 30 mph?

You can de-restrict it. to get 45mph. If you go to http://www.chinesescooterclub.co.uk and then the technical section and lok at the two How-to-guides.

Two scooters is better than one

There are both Polini and Malossi cylinder kits available. The same engine is in a number of Piaggio product like the Vespa LX, Piaggio Liberty, Aprilia Scarabeo.

OK back to the OP.

#2 Get the Malossi camshaft. This will give you more top end.

Then wait for a 125 or up.

If you mean other scoots generally, too big a question really, but if you mean other Vespas, then yes - parts from the ET2 and ET4 are pretty interchangeable, and some parts from the later LX's will fit your ET4 (and possibly the Piaggio Typhoon, Sfera, Zip, Liberty, NRG etc too). You can pick up used ET spares pretty easily on ebay for reasonable prices, but for important engine spares etc when you need new, you can mail order/buy online from several good dealers - I use AJ Suttons - google Vespaspares.

2. What mod's/upgrades is there, is there any way to derestrict to get a bit more speed? Also a big bore kit, what type would I need?
Yes, there's choice out there, but they may cost you more than the price of your scoot! Consider getting used to the ET first, and if its for you, moving up to an ET4 125 - you will get 50mph easily and probably for less 's, time and effort than kitting a 50cc.

3. Is there anywhere that I can find a Owners Manual (not haynes) even a service manual?
Yep - widely available on the web as free PDF downloads - google 'Vespa et4 manual' and work through the finds till you get what you want. But IMHO, if you're doing practical hands-on work on the 50, the Haynes manual is still the better option than the Piaggio manuals - you need Haynes manual no.3492 to cover that model, new and used ones on ebay.

Thanks, any help is appreciated

Good luck Tom, leave the Chinese scoots behind, come on over to the Italian side, then join me and another 10,000 world riders at World Vespa Day in London in June!
