Glad to hear things are going well! I figured no news was probably good news.

I'm getting excited and nervous about the ride.

If I knew what a TSA Agent was I would find that so much funnier.

Take care all and I'll see you in a few days.

Heh, if he thinks his crotch is tender when he gets off the scoot in San Diego, he has a surprise in store at the Airport for the return trip.

Special Request
OK guys this is getting exciting and we're all staying at home and following from behind a keyboard wishing we were out there!

As a relatively new contributor to the MV forum I feel that I am getting to know some of the characters/eccentrics and barmpots that have signed up for this adventure. The vicarious involvement in the Cannonball just can't be helped as we have seen many of the scooters through their evolution into endurance racers and even followed the shakedown runs almost watching the bits fall off!

I have a favour to ask....

It would be great to see a photo of each of the participants and their scooter. In particular putting a face to the avatar makes the whole thing more human. As Lance Armstrong said, "It isn't [just] about the bike". In the UK we had the annual barbaric horse race known as the Grand National this weekend. The nation puts a pound bet on its choice of horse and we are glued to the TV for the duration of the race. Before the race starts we all get to see the horses, jockeys and race colours, it adds to the excitement and also makes the spectators part of the event. Why should the Cannonball be different? We'll be able able to follow the blogs, posts and the moving map dots. Help our involvement by making sure we know what you all look like!!! Lets see the scoots and the mug shots before you start!!!

Funny you mention that.

I'll be set up to do rider portraits on Saturday at the rider meet, continuing at the hotel.

Please, please don't encourage Bill to perform any antics for the TSA. One of my fears is that I'll get to Dulles tomorrow and find myself waiting and waiting and waiting because those dour folks in Customs didn't appreciate Bill's sense of humor and have taken him out back for a full cavity search.

Nah, nevermind. Hearing him tell that story would be worth the wait.

This has been posted elsewhere but I think it bears repeating. Do yourself a favor and contact your credit and/or debit card issuer(s) to have them put a travel alert on your card. Making regular stops with random purchases (particularly gas) could easily trigger fraud protection and you'll find yourself standing there with your card declined. You can easily get it turned back on with a phone call but why stand there talking to a bank when you could be tooling down the road on your scoot?

The CSA I just spoke to at one of my banks let me know that we're all crazy but he said he's got a lot of respect for what we're about to do and wished us all a safe journey.
Called my bank - same response from my CSA - you are nuts! My CSA rep also gave me the following advice. Keep in mind, this is for my local bank, YMMV

1.) always use your PIN at the pump if you can - and if you can't, then go in and authorize for a specific amount.

2.) if you use your debit card as a credit transaction, it will likely put a hold on your account for $50-$75 and it may take up to three days to fall off and debit the actual amount purchased. So, two to three fuel stops a day, times three days, YIKES!

3.) should your card be declined at the pump, go inside and have them authorize it and it should work find.

4.) it's always best to have a visa debit card available for emergency use.

Waspman, you find yourself in the same position I was in two years ago. I was new to scooters and new to this forum and suddenly got sucked into the excitement that was building around this Cannonball thing. I was deeply infected and now it seems that the only cure is to jump on my scooter and do it myself. Cheers.

Well it's either organise a cross Europe race or ship the scooter to the USA!! The trouble is that the enthusiasm will probably throw me into doing one or the other!!

Astute observers will notice that I've just enabled the location map for iPhone users. Previously, the iPhone edition never got the location map.

Viewing pictures from a specific location is still a little bit funky, but it works.

Flying LAX-ORD-SAV on Thursday to reunite with the scoot which is already in Savannah.

Yes, after my first test run, let's just say I decided to move my heavy tools back to the glovebox from the cargo box! ;-p I also now lean forward if I'm accelerating aggressively! lol.

The bottom 2/3 of the box is the 3 gallon tank. The top 1/3 will probably just have spare clothes and a few snack bars in it. Nothing heavy. I figured there wasn't much harm in making it tall, since my shoulders are higher than that anyway.

Three new tires on the bike. Three tires on rims in the trailer. I've got a hunch I'll be blowing through back tires like nobody's business.

Hopefully it will get it out of its system before next week. I'm still trying to decide if a rider on a scooter would be more or less likely to get hit by lightning, but don't really want to do any field trials to find out.

I was just going over my GPS routes again and noticed that on Day 1 I somehow missed entering a couple of the checkpoints. I had them in the GPS as waypoints but the waypoints weren't a part of the route. Oops. I could have easily blown right by them without even noticing.

Now I'm paranoid and going back through every turn on every road between Savannah and San Diego.

Well, to be fair, I was planning to use one of these, with a hose into my helmet, but I thought it would hurt my back after a few days!
