Our Vespa dealer loaned a Denver advertising agency a Piaggio Typhoon for the king and queen of their St. Patrick's Day Parade. The parade is billed as the shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade in the country.

Fortunately no one got hurt. But the scooter was damaged. Riding two up when you probably have never driven a scooter before is not one of the best moves.

I feel sorry for the dealer and the person that got thrown off, but I am impressed by the ability of the rider to crash into a stationery car...

Sort of reminds me of the epitaph: Here lies Patrick McDrake, he grabbed the clutch instead of the brake.

Seems the driver lacked the experience and skills to control a scooter, let alone carry a passenger. Looked like they forgot to wear helmets, too! A bad combination!

You can see him dragging his feet...
In the mid-70s I sold mopeds for a while. We saw the sam behaviour periodically.
People sometimes just freeeze, with the throttle on, for some reason.

They are lucky that weren't hurt. I can't imagine letting anyone who hasn't ridden a scooter / motorcycle before ride with a passenger. That poor scooter didn't have a chance.

Go back and watch the video on a large monitor. Just when the clock ticks 9 seconds, you can see a big gust of wind hit the scooter from the left side, blowing the rider's green hat off. It happens just as the scooter blocks the camera's view of the right-most car in that line of parked cars. That gust of wind blows the scooter over to the right and the rider then attempts to correct by steering it to the right, then to the left then to the right... into the back of the parked car. It's a classic case of correcting, Over Correcting, MASSIVELY OVER CORRECTING... WHAM!

See i keep telling people never ride a blue scooter on St Patricks day when your dressed in green. You need to ride a GREEN scooter. Good eye JOHN He was lucky the suv was there or it could of been worse. I also think he hit the gas as he was trying to brake-compensate for the wind. If she had really been holding on nobody would of got hurt. Except the scooter and the suv I would like to hear that guys explanation to his insurance co. Glad it wasn't my car

Gosh, I dunno, jrsjr - I think his hat flew off because of the cartoonish level of fear he suddenly experienced when he realized he had no clue what he was doing.

Actually, you have to feel bad for that poor girl. She was probably so proud to win the Parade Queen contest. Then she gets stuck straddling a scooter in a dress while being driven around by the Dork King, getting dumped a$$ over tea kettle on the pavement in front of absolutely everyone who matters in her life. She'll have to move away to salvage any dignity at all.

However....I did laugh - and call my husband over to see the video.

He thinks she'll end up on Letterman and start a great career.

Maybe it's because I'm at work.

Normally, I would find them funny too. I just had surgery to fix my broken collar bone last Friday. At each impact, in each video, my sphincter puckered and my shoulder ached. Ouch.

Crashing Sucks...
I've crashed on the racetrack
I've crashed on the street
I've crashed in the dirt

I've hit stationary objects
I've been hit by cars
I've hit absolutely nothing and crashed anyway
I've been hit by animals

It's never...ever fun, or funny.

Unless of course it's on video, they walk away, and you don't know the person involved. Then it's friggin' hilarious.

All you can do is constantly look ahead (Uncle Phil's 3 second rule), wear the right gear, keep your wits about you, and make sure your bike is in good order.

This stuff IS dangerous, but it doesn't mean you have to get hurt.

What was the dealer thinking loaning a scoot to be used by a n00b? Not exactly the kind of exposure they wanted, I'm sure.

Ouch.

(it's still freakin' funny)
