Only 91 Miles away...

I am a "Early Person", so can ride up and meet you guys for 8AM on Saturday Morning for Breakfast and spend the day.

If any of you have iPhones, check out Glympse.com.
Very nice Tracking Program and can be observed from a Computer or iPhone.

Thanks,
Keith

That is a bit far out since I don't know my kids' gymnastics schedule yet. I won't know until school starts for them. Hopefully they won't be competing yet. If all works out well, I will be there for 2 or 4 days.

Friday going to the Dragon and Cherohela will include NC and TN. Sunday going over to the Moonshiner will include NC and maybe SC.Virginia would be another 200 miles across NC.

Thanks, that sounds like fun.

Put me down as attending, but I'm camping ... but probably will spend a lot of time with the group where they are.

Is the camping area, under the trees or out in an open field?

Yes, I looked at the website ... black and white map of the State Park camping area, cabins, lake and things. Even brought it up on Google Earth ...

There a lot of things I do before I get on the forum and ask questions, that I may need answers to.

Just wondering, anyone got an empty bed or couch for at least the first two days? If my daughter starts competing then I'm headed back home. Right now I just want to get out and ride until my heart is content.

Saturday Ride
Did 914 miles in 47 hours from Friday evening Sunday evening using thegathering as an excusse to go. (Switch to honesty here.)

For some reason Mr Dirt decided a 25 anniversary trip to Mexico was more important so I was on my own.

Found a good modification for the Gauntlet. Here is the ride map.
http://goo.gl/maps/72gP

We will have breakfast at The Lodge at Coperhead. I had a great breakfast there this morning to check it out. If we leave Vogel at 8:00 we will arrive for breakfast aroung 9:00

Still need to verify lunch location. We tried a recommended one last time but service stunk. Food sould have been good if itwasn't cold.

Think we have Friday worked out too and I will post it next.

Friday Ride.
http://goo.gl/maps/55Km

This will be our long day. 238 miles to do the Dragon and Cherohala.

Breakfast at the Blue Mounatin Coffee and Grill in Murphy, NCaround 8:30. Had a good basic breakfast their yesterday. Buffet, so quick on a long day.

North to the Dragon. A stop at Deals Gap for souvineers.

Next stop Thunder Mountain store at the start of Cherohala.

Late lunch at THE Bakery in Telico plains. (If the sign says Bakery and .... you are at the wrong place with lower quality meal. You have been warned.)

Then south back to campground.

Still working on Sunday details.

Probably will have to make another planning trip.

Darn.

There will be another chance though.

Thanks for these updates Fuzzy...
Ive been on some of these routes, with some guys that hang out at Riders Hill.

Keeping an eye on this thread, I want to ride up from Marietta early Saturday AM to connect up with you guys for Breakfast and do the ride.
I will touch base with you as it gets closer to see my best approach to connect up with you guys.

If you plan on doing any more exploring, PM me, and I will ride with you.
I am often up near Dahlonaga / Helen, (Smith house for Lunch) on weekends. I have a friend who lives near Riders Hill, who knows all those routes we could maybe also invite.

Thanks,

Keith,

Excuse my stupidity but I've never been camping before. I plan on purchasing a tent and sleeping bag for this trip. Do I need to reserve a spot to pitch my tent? Is there a place to shower? I was planning of taking the bare minimum. And leave some at the camp site if possible. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Best to reserve a site, the campground is popular and does fill up. This campground will not reserve a specific site just that one will be available for you. More than one tent is allowed per site and you can sae a little sharing a site with someone. There is a $5 per day fee for each vehicle which includes MP3s. Selection is first come first served. There are bathrooms and showers spread through the camping area. Best thing to sleep on is a Thermarest mattress. Packs small but is self inflating.

We will be getting together for some meals at the cabins when we don't go to restaurants so you won't need any cooking gear. Best not to have food inside tent as it can attract bears for an unplesant experience.

Shouldn't be too cold but possible to be in 50s at night. Check forecast close to date.

Here is first attempt at Sunday route: http://goo.gl/maps/9GkK

Breakfast at "B" at Hofers of Helen, a German Bakery. http://www.hofers.com/ We had lunch there during the Telico Plains gathering.

Over to Warwoman Rd to Moonshiner 28. Down Moonshiner into SC and circle around to Highlands, NC. We still need to check out the route through from Moonshiner around to Highlands.

After a look around Highlands down to Dillard "D". We could do lunch at The Dillard House Restaurant http://www.dillardhouse.com/restaurant/

We also need to check out the roads from Dillard going southwest.

edited for a change in map link.

Forecast s pretty warm, but my wife is out of town this weekend so I may try to get up there to check out the Sunday route options to Highlands.

This is the sharing of plans if anyone wants to join me. Hope to get a "bunkhouse" cabin at High Valley in Suches. It will have an extra bed, and I DO SNORE.

Sorry to sidetrack this thread.

Thanks to all for concerns and especially prayers. Dad is 89. He went in hospital with pneumonia last week and Doctors expectied him to be out Tuesday. My sister has been there helping. He has not done well and I am going to give my sister some relief and spend time with Mom and Dad.

I often tell young parents to cherish their children becuase they grow up and leave home before you know it. We need to spend time with and cherish our parents too. Hopefully Dad will be back home soon.

Lifting him in prayer. Our dads are not only the same age and classmates at the naval academy, but mine has been through pneumonia in the past as well. They're tough as nails and they call them the greatest generation for a reason.

It is looking like I may be able to make this gathering. I can't confirm yet but keeping my fingers crossed.

Three years and I have only been able to do one ride and one rally, and Fuzzy was there both times.

You Luthorhuss and Bulldog were the first MP3s I rode with.

I have a reservation for a tent campsite arriving Thursday (20) afternoon thru leaving Monday (24) morning.

EMT (David) will also share the campsite when he comes, as the number of nights is kind of odd with him.

For myself, I'm guesstimating 2.5 days to reach Vogel State Park. Average ride days about 350 miles, except the half day from Atlanta to Vogel.

Start out in Arlington, Texas (Tuesday, 1 to arrive at Vogel State Park (Thursday, 20)

Look forward to meeting those I've only talked to over the phone or passed PM's to in the forum here.

the first ride isn't until Friday.

check-in to the park is after 1pm to 10pm.

I'd be interested in knowing how Sticky might get to Vogel Park also.

As I'm riding I-20 from Metroplex to Atlanta, then up hwy 19 to the park.

Unless you want to ride freeways from Brunswick take
- 341 to Lumber City
- 19 to Dublin
- 441 to Eatonton
- 441 / 129 to Athens
- 129 to Vogel Park

All good road avoiding interstate. Most of it is 4 lane and not much traffic.

An alternate route I like when riding is 57 from I95 to 441. Almost all 2 lane and on 57 more interesting road without much traffic.

Here is the route I was planning http://goo.gl/maps/1mZP According to Fuzzy's suggested route our paths will cross at Hazlehurst and would be about 195 miles (4.5-5 hours into my trip and about 87 miles (2.5 hours) into yours if I figured it right. Times are on the conservative side. I added some time to the google times.

Originally I was thinking about doing the whole ride on Thursday but I am rethinking that as it could easily be an 11 hour day at 452 miles on this route as I won't be riding Cannonball style. So if I left on Wednesday and stopped in Hazlehurst for the night you could ride up early on Thursday and we could leave from there. The down side for you would be that you would be doing 343 miles on Thursday. Or if you can do it maybe you could leave Wednesday evening for Hazlehurst. Maybe you or someone has another idea?

Funk we wouldn't be crossing your path until where 19 and 129 meet which is about 12 miles away from Vogel. Looks like an interesting 12 miles though.
