Re: Conversion: Fitting a Vespa LX with 150cc 2-stroke engi
doniq wrote: I got interested in scootering about a year ago, here is my scooter project. A modern Vespa with a 2 stoke engine (had to be 2 stroke) and bigger than 50cc - the biggest 2 stroke engine I could get my hands on. Along the way I made lots of assumptions and a trunk load of mistakes. It took me the best part of a month in my spare time. Sorry for my english My project is smaller than yours... maybe you can help me finish mine. So... i need to update my Vespa S 50 2 Stroke (Same as yours) for use one HID Xenon Bulb, but for this is necessary to convert the Stator AC to Full Wave DC and remplace the stock regulator / rectifier with the new one in FULL DC output. This one Regulator/Rectifier Podtronics BGM6698... I looked for information on the Internet, but no information regarding the vespa with the same specs. The stator Vespa LX S has more wires ... Red, White, Green, Blue, Grey and Yellow. You know how to proceed to the change in Full Wave DC? thank you very much Matias |
I have not personally used HID on my Vespa, I am sure plenty of other people on this forum have experience and can provide accurate recommendations.
However, my humble opinion is this; With your Vespa LX S 50 - Do not try and use the stock AC headlight circuit for running HID Xenon, even if you connect it to a full wave DC regulator / rectifier - the AC headlight circuit voltage varies depending on engine RPM which is OK for normal bulbs but not good for HID which is designed to work with proper 12V DC battery levels. It is a better idea to create a new circuit for the HID Xenon, connect directly to the battery via a FUSE and SWITCH. Always use a FUSE and appropriate wire gauge for your circuit. The stock regulator may struggle to "keep up" with extra load of the HID and still have "enough left" to charge the battery. Check the ratings and measure the loads. I suggest do not use a HID with a power rating greater than 35W in your Vespa LX S headlight - the HID produces a LARGE amount of waste heat - much more than your existing AC bulb, it might cause your enclosure to melt and the HID to fail. Replacement enclosures are expensive. Check the colours of wiring with the schematic diagram. |
Thank you for your reply !
i have try DIY circuit for the HID ... the result is not very good the lights are not smooth and not so bright when the vespa running at low speed. Maybe you have idea for convert the Stator in Full wave DC ? I think this is the best solution. if possible Matias |

Thank you doniq for this post, I've followed all the steps and went to same issues or even different.
Mine is a vespa Lx 125 4t, so I added the oil mix tank, to run unleaded fuel. Engine and loom are from a skipper 97 2t, Carb and exhaust came from a hexagon lx, Had to put a longer shock because the wheel touched the rearguard Had to add a vacuum on the carb for the air, because there is no vacuum on the engine for skippers, Doniq's style swingarm work perfectly, you da boss! but now all is working, it looks like piaggio manufactured it! That's still unfair that we can't have a center stand. Enjoy guys ![]() Vespa Lx 125 2T |
