I found a good photo of the MP3 caliper carrier

This also looks like a 240mm disc, with a Frando F101 caliper

That disk looks like it may even be larger than 240, if those are 13" rims.

I got the MP3 caliper mount in the mail, but they sent the wrong side, grrr

Does it look like it will work (if it was mirrored)?

Sort of answering my own question:
The MP3 caliper carrier (part # 2B0006085) will more than likely fit on a GTS, however the brake caliper bolts are at an angle (compared to the shock mount) and meant for non-floating calipers (rear GTS & front LX). I'm not confident that a 240mm disc with a non-floating caliper is an upgrade over a 220mm disc with a floating caliper.


I don't own an LX, but swapping to the MP3 carrier/disc(and caliper?) would be a way to use a 240mm disc on the front (with a 12" wheel). Stoppies anyone?

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I saw that the MP3 now has 258mm wavy rotors. 13" wheels are probably required for clearance.

Looks like they may be using the rear GT caliper to space it out by 10mm. Did the same on my LX to go from a 200 to 220 disk.

Good catch! This should be a pretty simple upgrade for older MP3 owners. I also think it means that the 258mm rotors would work on a LX with the MP3 caliper carrier (and 13" wheels).

Any idea how to determine if one of these 258mm non-floating caliper setups would be better than the stock GTS?

Here's a comparison of different caliper carriers. The MP3 caliper is definitely spaced further out from the axle.

I can confirm that the Aprilia SR-Max 300/Gilera Nexus 300 rear caliper does NOT fit with a 13" wheel. The SR-Max/Nexus both had 240mm rear disc, and the same rear caliper as the GTS front caliper (with an adapter bracket 649162)

funny, I've been trying to see if I can go to a smaller disk on the rear, like the 200mm from the LX front.

Yeah, there's no OEM small 5-hole rear hub that I know of either. Re-drilling should be possible though.

Just out of curiosity, do you want a smaller rear brake so that you can run a smaller wheel? This might be useful for Scomaldi type swaps.

wanted to do a smaller disk for less weight and don't really need more stopping force in the rear anyhow.

I think the hot setup for a scomaldi would be to base it on the 200 and use the lx gear case. gets the 10in wheel and a shorter wheelbase

There is a very simple brake update for the GTS, if running 13" wheels, which cost about £170 (EUR190/$215) depending on taxes, etc.

This will give you a 250mm front disc, standard caliper and use sintered pads.

not full Brembo, but cost effective for servicing and not overkill.

Parts have been available for a while:

BRAKING adapter bracket - POW44

MALOSSI (Galfer) brake disc - 6217150

The parts were designed by different suppliers to put bigger brakes on the Gilera Runner earlier performance 50, 125/180 models, but will fit the GTS.

Based on Oops previous calculations the increased disc diameter, combined with better pads and the LX master cylinder may give a real OEM+ brake upgrade, even with a 240mm disc.

I have the bracket and a machines late Piaggio MP3 front disc (258mm machines to 250mm) for the OEM+ look and I'm awaiting a quote from a reputable brake system manufacturer for some 250mm discs, other than the Malossi ones.

Additionally, I'm looking at getting a similar bracket CNC'd for a 240mm disc on the GTS for general fitment on 12 or 13" wheels.

In theory, the proposed bracket would allow the use of the normal 240mm MP3 disc on the GTS front, but also allow the Late 300-500 MP3 258mm disc to be used on the Gilera Runner ST models (which currently runs a 240mm disc.

That open window in the bracket is a bad idea as most the force is in shear.

The bracket is quite heavy duty and machined not pressed.

In addition to my ideas on available parts for cheap/simple OEM+ brake upgrades, I have just discovered a brake caliper bracket for the rear of the Leader/Quasar engine to allow 240mm brake discs (Gilera Runner ST /MP3 front) on the rear of the Vespa GT/GTS or any other which previously use the 220mm.

This would be a simple plug and play, bolt on disc and bracket. the part is used on the Giler DNA 125/180 machines and is part number 597326, I have a new one on order, so once I get chance I will add the pics of the 250mm front set up and 240mm rear.

Any photos?

Sorry for the delay, been travelling for work and had to get some time in the garage.

So the front, the caliper bracket needed a little dressing as the disc bolts were fouling slightly on the back of the bracket (where the disc bolt heads pass) needed dressing as the material is quite thick.

But the brakes fit nice under the 13" rims and I just need to bleed the brake up (as used a recon'd caliper).

I haven't fitted the LX master yet a will see ho this feels first.

Do you know the part number of the rotor, or which bike it came from?

The inital set up was done with an MP3 258mm rotor, which I had machines down to 250mm for the set up. There is a Malossi disc which will go straight on (and save grinding the bracket to cleat the disc bolts, as has counter sunk screws)

I need to follow up with EBC who were drawing up and quoting on some 250mm VR discs.

Are you concerned with the outer hole's distance to the edge of the rotor? It looks to be very close.

I hope someday a company will make a bracket to use the 258mm rotor and OEM caliper. It seems like it would offer the best low-cost but OEM quality braking improvements.

The issue with is contact between the rotor mounting screws (the Malossi rotor has counter sunk ones) and the Braking bracket (as the material is quite thick.

I have dressed the back of the bracket and edges which contact the brake pad ( to ensure pad movement and zero contact with the rotor screw heads.

I also have a set of 250mm VR discs in manufacture at EBC, which work out at £45 each. I will need to purchase the MOQ (minimum order quantity) of 10 parts and they will become a purchasable part.

If anyone fancies a 250mm disc, let me know. I can also get the brackets for about £40.

A nice little upgrade.
