I'm not sure whether this is an oversight or intentional. The file upload button is the only one I always get to see in German.
My board language is set to English. (Is there even another language? Haven't checked.)

Also, the text that says "no file selected", or something similar, is contracted on the profile page, even though there is plenty of room. On my desktop (Ubuntu 20.04, Firefox 88) the text looks like this:
Ke...lt

All cosmetics, but I thought I'd mention it. It's probably hard to spot when your OS is set to English like the board.

Have I written enough words, yet? I'm getting tired of typing on the screen. I much prefer regular keyboards. Maybe I should hook up the bluetooth keyboard.

That particular element is supplied by the browser, rather than the forum directly, so the text and the button follow the OS language rather than the text supplied by the forum. That said, I do have some say over how wide the element should be, and in fact I've just now removed any size specification. I'm hoping that will allow the German-language version of that element to fit.

As it happens, in my day job I have occasionally been involved in UI localization issues, and it is well-known in those circles that UI designed in English will almost always break when translated to German because of the size of the text. So really, I should know better.

Thanks again for the tip.

not sure if this is a bug or a feature -
Nested comments are not included when the quote button is used to reply

eg: In the Molto Verboso Awards thread, I wanted to reply to Jess's comment "Confirmed" in response to lomunchi's comment "I have no idea how to get this award, but one of my proudest actions ever here is inspiring the term Veni Vidi Posti... or at least I think that was me!"
In the past, pressing the quote button in Jess' post would bring up both his & lomunchi's post.
Now, only Jess' comment is included.

Might very well be intentional.
I remember a series of posts from long ago that took it to a laughable extreme. Not sure if this was a correction of that.

It is in fact intentional. I like it. Jim hates it.

I suspect I will have to change it back, or compromise and have only a single extra level of nested quoted. Sadly, leaving only one extra level is the hardest possible case (from a coding perspective) so I'm kind of facing a challenge here.

Bug or feature?

I noticed that if I click an emoticon, it enters it at the cursor. So far, so good.

I also noticed that if I then click enter to start a new paragraph, the forum instead repeats the emoticon. It continues doing this every time I hit enter.

Is this intentional, for some reason?

Bug, but already reported. Also, the code in question is archaic and fragile, and every time I make a change there it gets worse. So I'm going to stop making changes. It's also very browser-specific (as in, each browser behaves a bit differently) and so it's very hard to get right.

I will likely replace the entire message editing facility, but this is a very big task, so for the moment we are going to live with this bug.

Fair enough. Thanks for clarifying. And sorry I missed the earlier report / double reported!

I suppose we should just agree to call it a feature, and enjoy it!

Hah! I saw that. I'll add it to the list. In theory, probably not difficult.

MV hosted photos don't get quoted because they are not part of the message text, whereas video tags are. When we go to inline hosted photos (someday) I will no doubt be asked to remove them from the quoted text.

Favorites
Jess,

Any chance you could modify the 'Favorites' feature. I have 6 pages of these and they are sat there in a totally random, haphazard order. If I want to refer to a saved article, I have to scroll through all 6 pages until I find it. Can it be made possible to 'click and drag' items so the saved articles can be arranged into a more user friendly order?

That's... actually pretty difficult. I don't think such a feature is likely to come about any time soon.

The order isn't entirely random -- they are ordered according to recent posts, with the ones that have been updated recently at the beginning. In this sense, the Favorites tab (and the other like it) are just like any other forum area, only not specific to one forum subject. They are, in fact, synthetic forums.

That's a shame, but I totally understand it's a tough fix. I find it an invaluable resource when researching a technical problem. At least as it currently is I'm reminded of what's saved when I'm looking for something.

Often, ideas and suggestions like this one lead off in other directions. Someone might ask for a particular feature or behavior that is difficult, but often there are other ways to solve it. Many of the features you see here today came about like that.

So I'll stew on it and think about other ways to solve the more general problem of keeping track of useful topics.

One not-very-well-publicized feature is Notes, up in the menu bar at the top. It is a running note that can contain anything you want. In an ideal world, it would behave like a wiki page, with formatting and automatic topic title expansion. As it stands, it is only plain text, and I don't think a lot of people use it.

Attila, if I were in charge of MV, I'd give you a 'MM', you are the mainstay of this forum.

Thank you but I'm more of a long-winded pain in the ass ...
But scooters are the real passion of my life, I believe in them a lot ... even if I don't have a Vespa.

Maybe if it had a markdown feature and was downloadable with git clone.

Oh, and one more thing: I never expected people to have multiple pages of favorite topics. The fact that you have six pages is a shock. A good shock, but still a shock.
I have a lot of favorites pages too. A lot, like 70!

Basically, I (ab)use Favorites like "Watched Threads" - this way I can continue to follow threads of interest because they pop up in the synthetic subforum. But I don't actually want to "Watch" them because then my inbox gets polluted.

A couple of ideas:
1) add an option in the Search menu to "Search in Favorites only"
2) allow a user to "Watch" threads without triggering email notifications (makes sense now that watched threads have their own synthetic sub-forum)

Use the 'Notes' feature instead. You can order them as you wish, and add comments to links.

I never found a use for the favorites feature, but I don't use a phone for MV, when it might be more useful.

I woke up this morning thinking about how to achieve something like that.

That's exactly why I created Favorites to begin with -- it's for stuff you want to keep track of, but not necessarily be notified of.

That's just Favorites

I don't think you need to have a phone for Favorites to be useful. Think of it like an internal bookmark.

Personally, I like favorites. I've captured a lot of useful threads that I occasionally refer to.

emoticon in the subject line?

When I try to put an emoticon in the subject line, it comes out in the body of the text. Is that new, or has it always been that way?

By the way, my Notes section is full to busting. It would be awesome to be able to use markdown to help organize it.

Emoticons in titles aren't supported. When you click on an emoticon from the sidebar, it will always target the message text as the destination.

Understood. I have notes on my list for improvements in the near-to-middle future. I like markdown as well, but we'll probably use BBCode (just like the wiki pages) to remain consistent with the rest of the forum.

If I had an infinite amount of programming capacity, I would make it so that each person had their own personal multi-page wiki. Alas, I am but one programmer, and I am coding as fast as I can.
