I finally got the courage to take the Vespa GTS300 from White Plains in Westchester NY to Flushing, NYC after reading reports of Vespa owners riding on NYC bridges and trips to Bear Mountain from NYC.
It's a trip that will enable me to take the GTS300 farther into NYC as well as the north and south forks of Long Island.
I got on the Hutchinson River Parkway with speed limit of 55mph where cars typically drive under 65mph. The parkway is mostly devoid of potholes or other defects. The GTS300 was quite comfortable in that situation. There is enough power to pass cars that actually drive at the speed limit.
The only time I felt a heightened sense of alarm was the area where the parkway crossed the interstate I95 with cars jostling to get to the exit onto I95.
Crossing the Whitestone Bridge itself was also easy for the GTS300. There was a slowdown right before the bridge where I constantly checked for cars behind me to make sure they were slowing down. Otherwise it was a sublime experience on top of the bridge looking at the city skyline.
Flushing is a very busy city within NYC. The GTS300 is in its element in the city. Unlike in a car where you are forced to keep driving or find those precious few parking spots, the Vespa can pull over anywhere without blocking the road and for the same reason it's perfect to ride around the congestion.
Upon returning home I ordered the tallest windshield for the Vespa. I think the added serenity and protection from a taller windshield will make the GTS300 that much more comfortable on the highways.

Just keep you head on a swivel riding there. I grew up on Long Island and people drive....interestingly....there. In the twenty years since I left it's gotten even more interesting. My parents passed away in the last two years so I will have less reason to even think about return trips.

You should think about riding north instead. Putnam and Dutchess Counties are pretty and scenic without the traffic of Westchester.
