We are deep into persimmon season with just a few more weeks left (likely). By this time, all the leaves have fallen and only the orange globes are left.

There are two type of persimmon: Fuyu and Hachiya. Fuyu are eaten while quite firm like an apple and are one of my favorite fruits this time of year. Hachiya persimmons are generally turned into baked goods once they are very soft and are easily distinguished from Fuyu.

We had a Hachiya and I used to tell my friends it was a pumpkin tree. My mom used to bake crazy good bread and cookies with them.

That's a great name for the tree. I've never heard them called that. It must be a GG special. I've had a wide variety of persimmon-based baked goods but have never made any myself. I am going to try and dry some Fuyu in my smoker this next week.

We have an umbrella closed loosely upsidedown on the front porch to be used in the rain and the heat. Today its 39*C and this frog was found hiding inside. The umbrella was left opened so it could find its way out.

Capitola Wharf and purple ocean.

I often go home this way. It's about a mile south of my house. Capitola is a small village on Monterey Bay in Santa Cruz County. It is quite a little tourist place during the summer but like most tourist places, sleepy in the winter.

The wharf was built in 1858 and was a rehab of previous wharfs. It was primarily built to load sailing ships to bring redwood logs to milling sites. The trees were cut in the Santa Cruz Mountains and floated down Soquel Creek, just out of view on the other side of the wharf and cuts across the beach. Now the wharf is used for a tourist walk (quite nice actually), has one mediocre restaurant with a killer view, a store of some sort that I've never been in, and boat rental place that a lot of people use for fishing.

I'll be posting a few other photos of Capitola over the next week or so.

Santa Cruz was cited as one of the best 52 places to visit in 2022 by the New York Times today.

Train bridge over Soquel Creek (said So-kell) in Capitola. The creek's origins are in the Santa Cruz Mountains. In the 1850-early 1900, redwood trees cut in the mountains were floated down the creek to Capitola on Monterey Bay to be loaded onto sailing ships, anchored at the wharf, for deliver to mills. Those operation stopped sometime in the 1910s/1920s. The creek is on the far side of the Capitola Wharf that I showed a few days ago.

The train tracks run thru the county to a now-closed cement plant. It was also used to for deliver goods to local businesses. All that is now shipped by truck. There's been no traffic on the line for a decade or more. Everyone once-a-while, there a train that comes thru for some special event and I always fondly remember those days when the train whistle echoed though the neighborhood. There's several initiatives in the county to return the line to passenger service or turn the 32-mile long line into a bike/pedestrian path (I'm much in favor of this option).

The train bridge over Soquel Creek is beautiful and was built using various designs since the 1870s.

There's a pedestrian path along the right side of the creek that I ride 2-3 times a week. It's a gorgeous and quiet ride. I always marvel at the train bridge and years ago, you could walk out on it.

Best
Miguel

I don't know about the quality of this picture it's just a phone camera snap but I think the story makes the picture. Several years ago between jobs so I had the day off I went to pick up my kids from school.

I took my dog with me everywhere whenever I could. My wife would frequently say "you can't bring a dog there" but I did anyway and she was extremely well socialized because of it. Often times we would go to some function or other and she would be the star of the show a lot of times because she just loved kids. She taught herself to play hide and seek but was a terrible cheat, always peeked.

So after grabbing the kids we went to the field behind the school, rural northern Missouri they had a playground there for the kids and a huge field that went on forever. There was no one there right after school and my two kids were playing on the playground and I was throwing the tennis ball for Biscuit.

After we had been out there about 10 minutes the back doors of the school opened up and dozens of kids came running out with a couple of teachers to watch them. I guess it was some sort of afterschool program I had no idea about and my first thought was to throw the ball as far as I could in the direction away from the kids hoping they wouldn't notice the dog...

Well that didn't work they all saw the dog and immediately came running. The dog got the ball and started to bring it back but had to dodge several kids to get the ball to me and all the kids thought this was a wonderful game.

time after time the dog brought the ball back to me avoiding the kids but the kids were getting smart, working together to trap the dog and get the ball from her. One kid asks me while all this is going on why the dog keeps trying to bring the ball to me? "Well she is my dog" I reply...

To anyone watching it is obvious that everyone is having a great time, dog included and I am surrounded by dozens of running yelling laughing kids having a great tiem as well. One of the teachers walks up after about 15 minutes of this and asks me are the kids bothering me? "No maa'm we are all having fun thanks" She says "I just wanted to make sure they weren't too much for you" "Oh no not at all we are having a blast" OK she says and she goes back over to the bench about 20 yards away where the other teacher is sitting to watch the kids.

Finally another 15 minutes goes by and the principle comes out and says to me " I can see everyone is having a lot of fun but I can't let the kids play with the dog because of the liabilities" I said "I understand and that we would go but can I get a picture first?" She replied "Of course" so I yelled at all the kids to gather round so I could get a photo...not all of the kids jumped in for the photo op but there were a few.

Great photo, skids! 20-odd years ago when we had a young-ish dog and grass in the front yard all the neighbor kids would knock on the door and ask if Hannah could come out to play. Those kids now have kids, Hannah is in a can on the shelf and the grass is gone. The memories aren't, though.

Mike Holland,

We learned to sing "Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree" when I was a kid.
Regrettably, I had never looked up or saw a Kookaburra before.

Thanks for the great photo.

Bjorn Toulouse,

Wow, rolling, rolling, rolling on the river.

1. Do you just stay on the boat or do you move it around.
2. If possible, send some more photos of the boat.

Yes it moves! that was an over night stop in Lancaster. Top speed about 5mph. Takes an age to stop! 3 point turns are a hoot.

The Lancaster canal is pretty flat so lots of miles without locks. My favourite bit is the aqueduct just before you enter Lancaster.

We always hire the Duckling nice boat.

I will dig out some photos
