I finally had a chance over the holidays to start a little bit of work on my GTS that I bought in October. First on the list was getting rid of the speakers mounted to the knee pads and stripping out the rest of the stereo system. The left knee pad also had a switch installed in the top that was a mystery to me. Once I got everything opened up, I discovered that the switch was wired to a garage door opener tucked into the leg shield! Not useful for me in this moment, but I thought someone on the forum might appreciate the idea.

The original owner had also wrapped the knee pads with a wallpaper-like material to more closely match the custom paint. The knee pads (and covering) were in rough shape and full of holes because of all of the stuff mounted to them. I'm going to make a new seat cover and the wrap job gave me the idea to try and wrap the knee pads with the vinyl that I am using for the new seat. Worst case, it doesn't work and I buy new knee pads which would be necessary anyway and best case, it works and I get a more custom look while not throwing out perfectly serviceable parts. Process and pics below:

Mystery Switch

Garage Door Opener

I started by using spray adhesive to attach the vinyl to the front and top of the knee pad. Then I used a hair dryer to heat the vinyl as I stretched it around the sides and corners. I used Aleene's Tacky Glue for the edges and held everything in place wi

I continued heating/ stretching and using the clips to hold the vinyl all the way around. After gluing and stretching I left it all to dry overnight.

After everything was dry, I used an xacto knife to trim the vinyl down. I used an awl to create a hole for the screw at the top.

I was concerned that the thickness of the vinyl might not allow the knee pad to seat properly, but it worked great. I'm thrilled with the result! I do want to either replace the screws with silver ones, or just paint the existing screws with white nail po

Hey - that vinyl looks great. Nice work! I'll bet it will really tie it altogether once you get the seat recovered.

I was skeptical when reading your post but after seeing the photos I think it looks great. Nice work.

I was skeptical too, but had nothing to lose as the knee pads are basically swiss cheese

Smart job, a welcome change from the regular black issue knee pads.

I got a gut feeling that The Vespa Armani did start the same way...

Many years ago a friend gave me some metal knee pads, which I painted blue to match my Vespa.

I love the wrap! We have powerlets, gate, and garage door openers installed on our kneepads.

That's a great result! Nice out-of-the-box thinking and it looks great too.

Those metal painted ones are seriously top notch as well!

I've painted and carbon wrapped the shoulder pads in the past though my current GTS has the Scooterwest pads with the power point in it. I've also had a garage door opener with a push button installed inside the shoulder if my custom painted GTS. I used one that was designed to be installed on motorcycle handlebars which made it easy since all I had to do was program it and drill a small hole the size of the push button. Unfortunately that particular model isn't available anymore or I'd have on in my current GTS. I'm too lazy to follow the instructions in the wiki to bastardize a regular one to work with a remote push button.

I finally finished this whole knee pad, glove box clean up that I've been working on. In addition to covering the knee pads with marine vinyl to match my new seat cover that is in process, I swapped out the old cigarette lighter for an updated USB socket. I also installed a new chrome bag hook that somehow found it's way into my shopping bag when I stopped by scooterwest to pick up a sidestand!

I'm very pleased with the results and am generally having a great time with customizing things!

Looks great, less cluttered. The chrome bag hook is a nice finishing touch, I have one on mine.

Nice job! So much better.
I'm sure the previous owner loved his setup too.

That…is way nicer than I imagined when I first clicked on this thread. Fabulous work!

Agin, I'm thunderstruck: that's a crazy-smooth job as well. Kudos all around!
