On the first ride of the year on my Vespa P200e I noticed oil dripping from my gearbox. So I opened up the filler port and a whole lot of oil shot out and it was very runny and smelled like gas. I drained it and there is a lot of tiny metal flakes that are not magnetic.
So from what I have been reading on this forum is that the clutch side seal is toast.
I think it's possible that I left the fuel tap open over the winter and the float needle failed and the gas got through the clutch side seal.
Is there any other way fuel can get into the gear box? Is my motor toast
So where do I go from here? Any thoughts before I crack it open?

Your motor is definitely not toast, but the clutch side seal 99% likely needs to be replaced.

And you should probably look at your clutch since you have to take it off to replace that seal anyway. it'll need a new bushing and washer, possibly new plates as long as you're doing.

That's a rough intro to working on vintage motors, but splitting (and closing) the cases on a P isn't hard compared to older models.

Thanks chandlerman for the quick reply. That's exactly what I was thinking.
Good to have some experienced advice. Is there any other way fuel can leak into the gear box?

There is one other way, a minor design defect in some cases, called an "oil sucker," but it'll still involve splitting the cases to replace the case gasket, so either way, it's pretty much the same task, especially since you need to pull your clutch to sort that out in any case.

OK, I guess I've got some work to do.
I'll be posting my results when I get her back and running for anyone else.

You'll need to get a clutch castle nut tool and flywheel puller in addition to gaskets, seals (do both fly and clutch side while you have the cases apart), and maybe a cruciform depending on how long it's been since the cases were opened up.

Ideally, also a torque wrench.

Splitting the cases on a vintage Vespa is not hard as mechanical work goes, but can be a little overwhelming if you've never done it before.

I don't know of any folks from this forum in Vancouver, but there's a decent sized Seattle contingent who'd probably be more than happy to help out if you didn't mind hauling the motor across the border.

CM is on the money.

dollar to a dime that your clutch side is toast. and if you're going to do it, then plan on soft parts- clutch and fly side seals, gaskets all around, all the clutch brass and some plates, a cross and kick start gear, spring and buffers.

throw in a carb rebuild kit while you've got the cart open. a new needle and float will do ya good.

there's soft non metallic parts in the clutch, so I wouldn't worry too much about the amount of junk. but if I were in your boat, I'd pull the clutch off first to make sure I didn't need to order anything else!

Thanks for the advice
This will be my first time opening it up so I'm kind of curious what's going on

I'd pull it all apart before making that parts order. There will be some other jackassery going on that requires you to make a 2nd parts order if you go all on faith and "I should only need this" and order ahead. The one exception - if you actually need to order the tools to get it apart, then go ahead and make your best guess but don't be surprised if you need a 2nd parts order.

I just rebuilt my VNB recently. A little older version, but similar. Lots of good tips and lists.
