Modern Vespa

Hi guys,

My KS is lower, my guess is it slipped 1 tooth, hard to say. Its on top, return spring is fine.
Any suggestion for a quality replacement? Vespa 125 GTR 1977, tuned BGM 177

What engine is it for?

Vespa 125 GTR. It has a BGM Pro 177 kit but I don't think that matters besides the stronger compression that *eventually* killed the kickstart lever... so I'm looking for one that holds the extra power

Is it the short one or the longer one found on Rallys?? If it's the short one, get one for a Rally 200. It's longer so gives a bigger leverage. I would avoid FA they're made of cheese…

SIP brand kickstarter levers seems ok.
I know they act as a fuse and are made to break, should I order half a dozen?

If you ever ruin a brand new kickstart lever fairly quickly, your kickstart quadrant is the culprit. I had a bad quadrant ruin 2 kickstart levers. Everything was torqued to spec, all new etc etc. At $50 a pop, I wasnt happy two were ruined that quick. Showed my vendor the damage and they gave me some credit towards new parts.

The FA Italia ones are the ones I see that are the same shape as the original. Looks like the GTR and Rally are the same.

Rally and GTR are different. See where each one ends. SIP's kickstart is for a PX engine on an old chassis, so not compatible with original Rally engine...

FAs are OKish but tend to wear fast...

It's a shame. The original ones had that Piaggio shield badge. But mine is totally scraped away and worn at the end.

There were apparently 3 options compatible with the GTR/Sprint: the "Standard", the "VBB Style" and the "Rally Style", which, AFAIK these last two would only be adequate for a PX engine on an old frame (as the "exercise" bellow shows they would stand too low).

Safis, I guess you were referring to the Rally 200 version (the real one), ok, that would look fine, but I have strong legs and went for the version more alike the original

Just discovering things on the go

Any tips that help changing the kick start lever easy? It looks as I need to remove the flywheel cover? Also, if the actual lever is stuck on shaft, is it safe to tap it out from behind?

Just remove the bolt. It holds it in place.

The lever will come off easy.

Maybe check the torque setting putting it back on. 16 to 19 foot pounds. More and it will break, less and it can slip.

Take photos of the quadrant. It's probably fine, but there could be an issue that's visible.

Maybe pulling out the spark plug and rotating the kick start lever by hand I can remove the bold without taking off the flywheel cover? the same for installing the new one...

Flywheel cover does need to come off. The bolt won't come out otherwise.

This helped me when I replaced my ss 180's ks quadrant. It wasn't too hard

Doesn't look bad to me. Yet to receive the new kick start lever, meanwhile removed the old one, completely destroyed

I did it easily without removing the flywheel cover, just remove spark and rotate kick down by hand and remove bolt. Same when mounting, insert kick in rest position, rotate, bolt in, release kick and tighten. My 2 cents if it helps someone in a future
