When I drop this kind of money on a Vespa, I don't want any name on it other than Vespa...not Dior, not Bieber, not Witherspoon...I just don't get it.

Well you do make some valid points... At least my Badlands Pro suit and Klim helmet, gloves and boots go marvellously with the bike. Is it strange that I bought drop protection for my drop protection? Honestly in many ways I wish I was kidding :-\

OP. I was looking for a 946 because I do think it's amazing looking from a Italian design and when I heard they ride amazing just alittle slow I said ok I can deal with a big bore kit. I just didn't realize that they were hard to come by a couple years ago they were all over dealers with huge discounts I should've grabbed one or two. Oh well I'm excited to pick up the GTS 300 super tech this week and hunt for a 946. I would like a later one with no cross marketing

Really? People have been complaining about the looks of the Justin Bieber Vespa and the OP's GTS's gray color (which I like - and it's a used scoot, so it's not like there is any color choice)? Yet this gaudy faux-gilded monstrosity somehow escapes comment… I'll say it - the Dior 946 is officially the most vile Vespa in recent memory. The previous owner, who put fewer than 500 miles on it in almost 10 years, must have quickly realized the visual assault they were perpetrating on the public and then stuffed it in the back of the garage, covered and out of sight. $35,000? Maybe $3,500 and then use the savings for a makeover.

No no. There's a few threads where most of us vilified that scooter.
For 35k I'd like the reflectors removed for starters.

Offer them $30K and I'll be glad to remove them for you for a measly $2500.

I never liked the 946, but I watched this yesterday. It changed my opinion a little.

Whoa…amazed how I missed this. Great video, and makes as good a case for the 946 as I can imagine. (Plus a good word for the GTS as well.)

Thank you very much for this video, but I would like to second that constantly repeated narrative of "hand made". The author of the YouTube video repeats it constantly, although the official Piaggio production video he is showing in one corner shows several times that the proper sheet metal (B&W) production tools are being used, that a robotic laser is cutting the holes and am pretty sure that the plastic parts are not hand carved from the bulk blocks of plastic, but the proper moulding tools are used. Even the stitches on the leather of the seat are made using machine. I do understand that they might be using high quality leather from the Italian design houses like Poltrona Frau or similar, but some machinery is still used.

The main reason why it is so expensive is that all those toolings have fixed costs in development and if those costs are split on smaller number of the units, cost per unit is bigger. Why they want to keep the costs higher? Here come the marketing guys who want to keep the 946 as an exclusive product, for selected clientele. Ok, you are right, some parts on that scooter are unique to that series and not re-used on the other models as well, again, granting the exclusivity.

It is OK to be sentimental as a reaction to the PR spin story, but let's stick to the facts.

At the end I would like to emphasize something: all mentioned above does not change a bit the fact that we are speaking about an absolutely gorgeous Vespa that I would like to possess, am just wishing that it was not reserved to the more Jeff Besos ones of us.

P.S. I like the simple one tone paint of the model that the author has, compared to blingy new-money Christian Dior paint scheme. But in the world where paying 35-58k for a scooter is not a problem, some excess in lack of good taste seems to be appropriate (to some people).

P.P.S. oh, this 946 is crying out loud for Zelioni rims which are, unfortunately, not produced any more. OEMs are similar to them, just with too many unnecessary details. Pity IMO.

I really enjoyed that video. Thanks for posting. I like the lines of the 946 very much.. I have never paid it much attention but that bulbus extension that the seat sits on it's very cool looking.

Back in January I also bought a used 2020 GTS 300 HPE Super Tech in the concrete looking color. Mine only had 179 miles on it, was in perfect condition and was being sold by a guy living 4 miles from me for thousands less than the cost of a new one. I get compliments on the color all the time. People posting negative comments about the color of a scooter owned by someone here makes little sense in my opinion. When you make a post like this, we all know you are only expressing your opinion, but you are criticizing someone else's scooter in addition to expressing your opinion. Why do that?

Beats me: Concrete was my favorite color for the SuperTech, but since that was no longer available, I ended up with Nero Convinto Matt, which was also the sole SuperTech available to me, and that was only because the person who purchased it as a gift brought it back because…her partner didn't like the color. But hey, I got it at a rare discount, and I do like the color.

Hey Apex, I just wanted to understand what is hiding behind this new trend, which is definitely not to my taste.

if the reason was really bargain buying, I can relate to that: once I bought car of my (affordable) dreams with <300 km on tacho (practically new), with so called Tageszullassung (this is something by law in Germany, if a new car was not sold by dealership within one year, they need to register it for one day only and it becomes the 2nd hand automatically) and discount of whooping 40%. the only minus to the car was the grey metallic colour, also not my favourite.

I was in my local dealer - Vespa Portland - yesterday. They have a Christian Dior 946 sitting on the floor. Not sure where the belief that none are available came from.

Might be that the standard ones are not available and only the Dior and other such editions are available (which cost considerably more than the standard 946)

Give it twenty years and someone will be putting a wrecked 946, a couple of LX50s, what's left of a Honda scooter after it got hit by a train and a length of drainpipe together and selling whatever they come up with as a fully restored 946, in a color nobody's ever seen before.

Yes, the 946 is a design exercise. Isn't that why most of us bought a Vespa in the first place. Stylish and classic.

There's one for sale near me for an ungodly sum of money. I don't know what they are worth, but it seems absurd. My grumpiness aside, I guess if anyone is desperate to find one and has a lot of money with a 946 written on it I can point you to it. I realize they don't grow on trees

With a lc motor like the Smax engine, the 946 would be a great bike. And Piaggio makes a motor like that.

There was a low KM one advertised here in Sydney for A$5K yesterday! Ad is gone so someone snatched it up quickly. I personally think that it's trying a bit too hard to look iconic. Give me a PX any day.

With any "halo" vehicle, regardless of how many wheels it has, "trying too hard" is definitely not a thing.

I hope you're looking for the red one. I heard they are the most coveted. Ask me why.

There are a few on the market right now (2013s under US$10k), though you might have to travel to get it (one even on eBay!)--and as others noted, sell very fast! I was super lucky that saw a new listing for one at the dealer only an hour from me that I was already planning to visit, the more I read & watched videos about the 946, the more nervous I was it would be sold before I got to see it when I arrived a the dealer when the opened the next morning.
My first Vespa. Needless to say, a GIANT leap from a little Sym Mio 50cc (which I'm keeping for the little errands). It's a 2013 (150cc for us in the states), and very low miles--a widow selling it--original owner--but was cared for by a Vespa mechanic friend/fellow 946 owner until I was lucky one to become its second custodian... Figure like a Saab (used to have a '97 900SE--which I loved), there's going to be a premium to own/maintain it properly too. But so glad I didn't get pragmatic and settle on something to save some $, and bought what I fell in love with--and very crazy--I don't have my full endorsement yet, so I couldn't even test drive it at the dealer! This week: saw listing Tues night, bought it Wednesday morning, got it delivered Thursday noon, and shock & awe wearing off, and rode it Fri evening. And still smiling... It's worth it. (maybe not a new designer version unless you can afford to just collect or add with your stable of exotic cars). But for only $3-4K more than other 150ccs--keep hunting, and hope you do get lucky to get one!!

I agree. If Piaggio is going to continue to make and market the 946 as a special and elite model (at a special and elite price) - they really need to do something a little more special and elite with its engine.

Looking at your 946, I could only wish that would be the 'basic' shape for all 150cc Vespas, life would be richer with such beauties riding around.
