Anyone have their Vespa/scooter attempted theft or stolen while parked in shopping center parking lot like Walmart or mall?
I know... sounds crazy. A good theft alarm might help.

personally I wouldn't leave it parked in a public space at night but during the day I'm not paranoid.

Somewhat unlikely in the US - not uncommon in some other countries though.

fair point. location matters, just ask an insurance company about how they calculate premiums

The limitation with alarms on scooters in the US is that the commonist way to steal one from a public place is to toss it in the back of a pickup truck.

In the US, I don't even think twice about it.

Steelbytes, I would never leave one in a parking lot overnight.

Dooglas, my thoughts exactly re toss in back of a pickup truck.

Thanks for your replies. Nowadays security cameras are everywhere. A good chain/lock would help prevent that.

Back in 1978, I had my '76 Harley Super Glide almost stolen from a shopping mall parking lot. I had only gone in for about ten minutes to see my girl. Bike weighed over 600 pounds and was chained up. This was a respectable shopping area. I was on my way out when I saw 2 guys with the bike halfway up a ramp on the back of a pickup truck. I screamed murder and reached into my jacket for something that really wasn't there (I don't carry). They dropped the bike and sped off. Beat up the tank a little. I learned 2 lessons that day - 1) if someone really wants your stuff, they can get it, 2) No one can steal what they can't see. After that, I parked in the delivery area behind a wall with the store managers permission. He was a biker too.

I just get good comprehensive insurance with a low deductible, my agent can spring for an alarm or babysit my bikes if he wants 😉
