I figured I may as well remove the evap and roll over. Posting this mainly so I can link to them for a wiki I will do on this.

The evap canister is a known culprit for stalling out and other oddball issues... on all models I might add.

Fuzzy EDIT: (I meant Sticky, dammit I hate when I do that), the can and its bracket look identical to the one in the 500. If so, that bracket just happens to exactly fit the mini air compressors that have been posted about.

My bracket went in the trash a year ago. No regrets.

Sticky, pay attention to where the vent line ends up. A full gas tank on a hot day (not that those happen often in Florida ) will push some gas through the tube. Don't want it venting around hot exhaust. On one occasion after over filling my gas tank I had some gas hitting the ground before I finished getting my gear back on to leave. The vent hose still goed up just under the seat bucket so the gas was pushed up and over. Also with a filter on the vent line, will it still work when it becomes saturated with gas?

If this subject is new to others, be advised that only North American Piaggios have the evap canisters and roll over valve installed. Others just have an unfiltered, open vent line on the gas tank. Many here and on general forum have reported solving problems by eliminating the canister. If your gas tank is under pressure or vacumn when you remove the gas cap then you have a cloged canister and or malfunctioning roll over valve. One member reported enough pressure that when unscrewing the cap it blew off past his head and over to the next pump.

The black thing under the seat is a charcoal, evaporative canister and is there to take gas vapor vented from the fuel tank and send it to the intake to be burned when the engine is running or vent it after it goes through the charcoal thus keeping it out of the environment. Or at least that is my basic understanding.

There are a few reasons to get rid of it.
1. The bike was designed without this system and it is only added to US models because of environmental laws in California. Some feel that it can have negative effect on performance of the engine and many times it is the first system disconnected when troubleshooting to rule it out.

2. Increases under seat storage area.

3. It has been reported that overfills of the gas tank can cause issues with evap canister (though I don't quite understand how the gas gets past the rollover valve) and the canister causes stalling and rough idling issues. This has also been reported in some scooters that have been tipped over.

4. In my experience the system (i think mostly the rollover valve) causes a negative pressure in gas tank. Some report positive pressure. From what I understand there is supposed to be zero pressure.

So I figured since I have the side panel off to fix my voltage regulator I may as well get rid of the evap system.

I was also thinking extra fuel, fire extinguisher, water of maybe even a can of fix a flat.

I put the vent line forward of the exhaust pipe so it should be safe. Not sure about the inline filter performance if it gets soaked with gas. I will be watching it and will report if it causes a problem. I am thinking that I may use this as a feed from an aux tank maybe from the pet carrier or somewhere. I would need to figure out a new way to vent.

Actually the bracket on the 500 is very different - but the concept is the same using that bracket to support something of ~real~ value in the per carrier makes a lot of sense! The bracket on the 250 looks to mount in square and level, as opposed to the oddball angle on the 500. Pic below.

Question - if you remove the rollover valve, what would keep the scoot from leaking gas in the event of a rollover? Not that I plan on rolling over any time soon....

Just a note - a hot exhaust won't make petrol liquid or vapour ignite - it's not nearly hot enough! It'll just boil or dissipate. Zero problem.

Yeah I wasn't as worried about gas on the exhaust as much as keeping it off the tupperware or and other parts that may not like it.

Holly. No not too worried about gas escaping if the bike goes over. I believe roll over valves are put in to keep the charcoal in the cannister safe.

Seriously though I don't think much spillage occurs so it really doesn't worry me much. I have and bikes going back to the 70's that I have dropped and the only gas issue I can remember is flooded carbs.

Looking forward to it. I am gonna need it I think. Just ordered over $500.00 in parts to change the VR and do all of the 12,000 mile service stuff plus replace the belt + rollers. Whew, it ain't cheap but is sure is worth it.

Gonna be down for awhile though...where did I put that pesky battery conditioner.

On the 400, Is that same canister under the cover in the very front of the storage area (same cover has a cig lighter power port)?

I don't have that setup on my 400, but what looks to be the same black box up at the front. Same procedure?
