I've always considered top boxes (or tail trunks) an evil necessity, so while I like to stay with original equipment where possible, I'm not going to pay over $300 for a genuine Vespa top box. Besides, I don't like the fact that they cannot be easily detached from the bike. So it was an easy decision for me to go with my favorite JCWhitney item, their $59 lockable, removable tail trunk. Although they now have added a couple of Givi look-alike models, I have had good service from this one and like its size. The supplied mounting platform attached to the Vespa rack pretty easily, but I did secure the rack in the open position with a hose clamp, rather than the plastic clip supplied with the Vespa rack. The trunk is easily removed by unlocking the latch, then pressing on a red button which releases the trunk from the retaining hook on the platform. The trunk is then lifted up and back. I think this is the same as the Givi set-up, but never having owned one, I'm not sure. The trunk has a convenient handle for carrying it like a suitcase.
If you need a top box but don't want to spend an arm and a leg for one, I can recommend this item!

Cheers,

Bob

The Vespa GTS top case isn't easily removable? I bought the Piaggio top case for my Fly and turning the key the other way in the lock de-latches it from the rack and it slides off. I guess I assumed the other Piaggio/Vespa top cases were like that...

I do like your solution though, and can't beat the price.

Actually, the angle of the photo exaggerates the size of the case. It's about the size of the Vespa top box I had on my GT. I had contemplated painting it, but although I love the red color of the bike, I don't want to overdo it! Besides, the satin finish of the case blends well with the seat, I think.

That's pretty cool looking, Bob. And you sure can't beat the price. Did JC Whitney have any other neat scooter related stuff?

I don't know about scooter specific, but they do have a lot of motorcycle stuff. Check out their website:
