Please note size of giant potato next to GTS. This thing is just visiting us from Idaho. Reminds me of my favorite tourist slogan many years ago when I was passing through Boise Idaho. Free taters for out of staters. You got a free 5 lb sack of spuds if you stopped in the visitors center.

President (then Secretary of War) Taft was pretty special and almost as big as that spud when he visited on September 6 1907. The article in the Olympian specifically mentioned his girth and enormous appetite. Apparently they had no tact when it came to Taft.

Yeah, I know it is touristy... But the International Balloon Fiesta is a big deal here every fall - Up to 1,000 hot air balloons floating around in the sky at the same time can be kind of awe inspiring...

The Chinese Haisun 31, a Chinese Maritime Safety Administration ship (with a description like that...you kind of wonder...) is in Honolulu until Saturday. Supposedly to conduct a joint search and rescue exercise.

I just don't feel right about this, as quoted in local paper,

"No. 1 (the visit) is, yes, an attempt to show the flag to remind the world that they (China) are players, and No. 2 it's an attempt to get some training and to travel long distances'. Sounds political to me...

Note: China were deliberately left out ot the recent RimPac military exercises. They could have played the "bad guys!"

Something just not right.. .

We also have (on occasion) the Blue Angels (Navy) and the Thunderbirds (Air Force) pay us a visit...maybe they can have some war games with the Haisun 31! O.K. enough of that...

On a more pleasant note....we do have the ProBowl ... for now unless our governor opts to let's loose with another bout of criticism on why it shouldn't be here...couldn't figure that one out...great event and brings a lot to the publicity and $ to economy!

Interesting place we live in....

LWCC reinstates wrestling team for 2011-2012 season

Lake Wobegon (Minnesota Press) - The Mist County Continuing Education Council yesterday announced the reinstatement of the Lake Wobegon Community College wrestling program starting this Fall for the 2012-2013 season.

Father Emil (retired) of Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility Catholic Church announced that they will be sponsoring an Ice-fishing fundraiser in Early October. Clint & Clarence Bunsen of Bunsen Brothers Ford, announced that the Sons of Knute Temple with be having a Tuna Hotdish & Bake Sale next month to start the fund raising. Not to be out done, Pastor Liz of the Lake Wobegon Lutheran Church announced a Lutefisk "Ferment-off" in September to aid the team as well. That should give all the Ladies & Mother's of Scandinavian descent of Lake Wobegon sufficient time to create some delicious Lutefisk to put into a friendly competition & help the team with their modest financial needs, (the most pressing of which will be the fuel to put into Coach Dickmeyer's 1979 Plymouth Minivan for away trips  & of course the extensive oil changes it requires).

Back in the 80s my sister moved to Hatch New Mexico. I got turned on to the Balloon Fiesta and the chilies. I'm glad I got to experience both.

Another product I ate bags of in Hatch were the pecans.

Hertford, NC.

Um. Catfish Hunter is from here.

Um. Settlers came here in the early 1600's.

Um. We have a log upon which turtles sun themselves, and an S-shaped bridge.

From: http://www.hertford.com/
Quote:
Hertford is the quintessential sleepy river town steeped in history. Beautiful Victorian and Georgian homes line a winding narrow road that follows the banks of the Perquimans River. Cypress trees draped in Spanish moss stand tall in the brown waters. And life has a decidedly relaxed pace. Perhaps age that has something to do with it -this is the heart of the ancient Albemarle region.

Hertford is one of the earliest permanent settlements in North Carolina, dating back to the late 1600s, and the countryside around the town pulses with history. The nearby Newbold White House is thought to be the oldest existing structure in the state. George Fox, founder of the Society of Friends preached around these parts in 1672. Across the river in the Durant's Neck area, Leigh's Plantation still draws exclamations of surprise when visitors round the bend and catch a glimpse of its huge brick facade. Constructed by slaves, it houses a third-story ballroom, dozens of rooms and parlors, and a double-framed porch with six columns.

Perquimans, meaning "land of beautiful women," was named by its earliest inhabitants, the Yeopim Indians, a branch of the family of Algonquians. Perquimans included the land between the Yeopim River and Little River; at its greatest extent, it reached from the Virginia border to the Alligator River. Today, its people occupy 261 square miles of low land between the Albermarle Sound and the Dismal Swamp.
We like it like this.

That is weird. If I hit the quote button I see everything you posted but nothing shows if I then preview it. Kinda creepy.

EDIT: It appears to be caused by the space between the trailing / in your url and the [/url] tag. At least, removing that space made everything Preview correctly.

JESS! FIX IT!

No, wait. Let me try again.

Dear Jess, our revered and beloved forum founder: If the above perceptions are caused by some mysterious programming anomaly and not by some stoopid, clumsy, fat-fingering on my part, I would be eternally grateful if you could spare a few moments out of your very busy schedule to have a quick ganders at it.

I'd add to that:

The Assyrians
The Babylonians
The Persians
The Greeks
The Egyptians
The Muslims
The Seljuk Turks
The Fatimid (more Egyptians)
The Crusaders
The Mamelukes (yet more Egyptians)
The Ottoman Turks
The French
The British

Did I miss anyone?

Well, we get those giant coyote/wolf hybrids now (Thanks Wyoming Ranchers!).

I grew up in Queens, NY and we would sneak into the '64 World's Fair every day when school was out. They'd mend the fence and we'd find another weak part to wiggle.

Of course, in NYC nothing has to come to you, everything is always there.
