Last weekend I went to see a 2007 GTS for a friend, it did not look good, yet the speedometer showed only 1005 miles but looked more like 10K.
He really wants a GTS so of course he liked the scooter, I am not sure if it is just grungy because it has not been taken care of or if the owner messed around with the speedometer.

The question is can they somehow change the recorded miles such as spinning the speedometer backwards or messing around with a chip, or if it was replaced, is there some place like the outboard engines have to download a code that translates into miles.
Does the original speedometer have a serial number that can be checked?

Any advise will be greatly appreciated
Thanks
William

Easy to change out a speedo.

You can pick them up on ebay for $100+-.

I know of no identifier on the speedo to match it to a bike.

...or the speedo could have failed at that mileage then fixed or was disconnected then reconnected.

Ask to see some service records. If there are none, walk away.

I agree with asking to see service records or ask where it was purchased from and contact them. Maybe make a condition of buying it is having it checked out by a reputable mechanic.

If the tires look like they have 1005 miles on them then look at the date stamp on the tire. If it's newer then 2007 I think there is some mischief going on.

I wanted to thank everyone for your replies.

I agree that there is something fishy about this GTS, and was able to convince my friend to keep on looking for a "honest" scooter.
