Tire is the Pirelli GTS 23 - 120/70P.
I have no idea what did this. No issues so far. Just noticed it while doing the walkaround before coming home tonight.

Question is, I don't know the thickness at the edge--should I worry about this?
Enough to replace it early?

Thanks for the reply.

The tires are not that old, and they've only got ~2200 miles on them. What you're seeing is dust from my gravel driveway, not oxidation or anything. I admit they do look gnarly.

even though they might be new to you they could have been in the warehouse for a couple years before you got them. look at the date code on the side of the tire.

18 yrs in the tire business - fwiw... I wouldn't worry about that one. As already mentioned, give it a look once in awhile. Likely will never develop further.

Good point and good call. Talking about the front tire only: 4708. I'm assuming that translates to week/year as it does on Pirelli car tires, so... mid-November 2008. Almost 4 years old. Now whether that is "old" or not...

Thank you, it's worth a lot; I feel better. I was only concerned because of the way it appeared to dig into the sidewall.

You have a sharp eye. Most folks don't check their tires closely enough.

your on the border line for aging. from my perspective I can see the micro cracking developing in the sidewalls and the hardening of the rubber on the tread.

Finish them off this year but put a new one on in the spring for sure. motorcycle superstore has a pretty good sale going on now on michelins.
