So, for those of you who have headsets and tend to listen to music while riding when possible (and safe) to do so, I thought it might be interesting to share what you listen to normally, and as a result, how it compares to our fellow MP3 riders here. I listen because it helps to keep my mind alert and engaged more fully with what is, at the core, a fairly routine set of tasks and attention priorities.

Myself, I listen to a fair variety. Daft Punk, Gorillaz, Here Come the Mummies, Metallica, Plain White Ts, Ozzy, Alien Ant Farm, Bag Raiders, Bo Burnham, Bon Jovi, Charlie Daniels, Breaking Benjamin, Coolio, Daughtry, Disturbed, Eiffel 65, Everlast, Journey, Kings of Leon, One Republic, Santana, Styx, Tom Lehrer, Rammstein and Weird Al, to name some that catch my eye as I run down my list. However, if I'm just out for a ride to enjoy, I tend to prefer more of the electronic selections, things that have a good underlying beat and tend to be more laid back and...I guess complimentary to the ride.

This is an artist I found recently as well and want to share, Lindsey Stirling. Just had a ride tonight with her new first album and it was a joy. Very much a modern twist on classical music.

Interesting question.
My "go to" playlists are based on a couple of Rolling Stone surveys:

100 best guitar songs - basically the best of rock and roll. I don't have all 100, but I have 88

100 best singers of the "rock era". I like this one because it is across several genres - blues, rock, country, rap, pop. Elvis, dion, little Richard, Clapton, who, doors, raitt, Karen carpenter, eagles, patsy cline, art garfunkle, aguilera, Houston etc. absolute a-list of singers. The magazine ranked the singers and then listed their best 2-3 songs. I've playlisted a bunch of them (250 or so). This is a LONG playlist with a ton of variety. Great for long rides or a day at the lake.

Lately though I've just been shuffling my entire rock library - we all have a bunch of albums that we know the best 3-4 songs, but some of the other songs generate a "who/what the heck is this".

Nice! Thanks for the referral - the young lady has talent. My wife the Dr in Musicology liked her too for an official stamp of approval.
Ever heard of Bond? Four hot chicks playing modernized classical on sci-fi looking instruments. Worth a listen
Personally I find soothing trance and house music doesn't get in the way of riding and puts me in the zone - ANYTHING by Carla Werner, Paul Oakenfold (especially Southern Sun with the two of them), Kirsty Hawkshaw, Cinephile - for some inspired bluegrass I LOVE the extraordinarily talenented Sarah Jarosz.
Other artists are Perfect Circle, Crystal Method and others of this genre...

Cinephile
Kirsty Hawkshaw
Oakenfold
Carla Werner

Usually pure classical stuff for most riding, but I'll switch to late 60s anti-war rants when hot dogging. Razz emoticon

70s Funk, Blues, Jazz, R&B.

Etta, Nina, Miles, Coltrane, Thelonious, D'Angelo, Lauren Hill, Ms Badu, EWF, George Clinton in all his various forms, Slave, War, Janis Joplin, Ohio Players, Norah Jones.

I did a 1000 mile round trip this weekend to see Meshelle Ndegeocello play in Marfa, Tx. Listened to a mix of her stuff, Etta's and Nina's. Her new album due in Oct is a tribute to Nina Simone.

Oh wow, if we're talking music, I could be on here for hours!

But two of my favourites with a riding theme and great lyrics...

Hahaha...they're a fun band, but rather raunchy. Definitely a party band, though, they have that kind of sound.

What I listen to depends on what device I plug into my stereo. But my most common ones are my old and new cell phones, so it's basically the same as my songs I've picked for working out. No set playlists (usually I just put it on shuffle), but some of the artists on there are:

3 Doors Down
Audio Adrenaline
Blindside
Chevelle
Hawk Nelson
Jars of Clay
Jimmy Eat World
Linkin Park
Luna Halo
Nevertheless
Philmore
Pillar
Reality Check
Run Kid Run
Sanctus Real
Seventh Day Slumber
Skillet
Stellar Kart
Switchfoot

and then a whole bunch of Mash-ups that pretty much defy artist/genre classification...

Yeah, I have music that ranges from Screamo to Alternative Jewish Polka...

Music .... have you ever notice that some of the music you listen to today, is the music you were listening to when you were younger ... the music of your parents.

Audio books ... I occasionally record Personal Development books and listen to it while riding.

And I still listen to a wide variety of music, I was a music major in college.

We all have our different taste in music. Enjoy.
