Tax front
I was recently given an old tax disc by my father-in-law. He used to ride a Vespa and the tax disc dates from March 1973. I think it looks rather cool and want to display it on my flyscreen, my legal tax disc is still on the bike although not in as prominent a place.
My question is-is it legal to display my 'old' disc as I ride around? As always TIA Ash PS I couldn't get the buggers to come out right way up so anyone that can help please do. Or feel free to invert your screen! Tax back ⚠️ Last edited by ashbrook on UTC; edited 2 times

its a lovely idea...........
but some 19 yr old jobsworth twat straight out of hendon is bound to ruin it for you by saying in a very nasal and condescending voice.... its illegal for you to display two tax discs sir....of course the "sir" bit will be dripping with derision..... I hate those no imagination, brainwashed, uniform wearing tossers.... |

Two things.
One. The police aren't the agency who deal with this its the DVLA. Two. The offence is failing to display a valid VEL. As long as the up to date one is displayed there is no reason to think that you would be prosecuted. Even if you were there is no way that you would be convicted. They would have to show that you were acting with intent to defraud which if the computer shows that it has a valid tax disc then why would you try to defraud using another one? The tax disc is basically outdated really as all details are held on the DVLA computer along with insurance and driver details. Perhaps a colour copy with something written on it explaining that it is for decorative purposes only would help? |

er renoir....
fair point, they don't make the rules but they do enforce the rules...and that requires intelligence and fairmindedness not blind observation of the regulations...which sadly all to often is what too many police officers display... and often if they are not sure they impound or penalise on the guilt before proof assumption, I have seen it done and had it done to me, the over zealous plod who impounded my bike for not displaying an L plate despite the fact I had a full licence because it wasn't on the system...and I have many other examples which i'm happy to share with you or anyone else for that matter........yes i did get the 3 points wiped, but i also lost work and had my day ruined... london police are a nightmare and seeing as thats where the o.p is i would be careful... wrong plod wrong day and it could be an issue. |

OK. Not getting into a discussion over Police actions. I was just pointing out the reality of the situation , and trying to offer some advice.
Sorry. |

The Ordinary everyday uniformed police officer has far more to think about than this Ashbrook.
I know... I cannot envisage a problem unless you get a particularly pedantic traffic officer who stops you for another misdemeanour and decides to completely go over your scooter. Go and get it beautifully laminated and provided you don't display it as your main disc you should be ok. If you do there are potential offences of fraudulently displaying VEL Hope this helps Sarah x |

No offence taken. I'm not a massive fan of some Traffic Officers but that's very much a different story.

i used to have two on my old 1966 SS180 - i put a thin sheet of plastic over the 1966 tax disc the put the current years one one the back of it, then ran it through a laminator and had the old one facing forward on the fly screen but the new clearly in view from the back...... never caused me any problems.

I think it would be wise to research if regulations require only a valid sticker to be displayed. That would take the what-ifs out of the equation.
What is the normal procedure when these discs expire? Place the new one over the old one? Scrape the old one off first? You might already have the answers based on conventional application. |

Thanks again- I'll take my chances-it's already laminated and just needs to be attached to the screen. Most of the plod I've met have been decent people and would definitely have better things to do than worry about a double disk issue. I'll be sure to report my findings!

Go for it. Displaying two might balance out the likes of me who don't display one at all.
(mine lives under the seat) Nice vintage Tax Disc, btw. Whether you display it or not, I think my priorities would be in preserving its condition. |
