Hi guys,

Despite having seen them all over Europe, I'm not a fan of the thermoscud-type of winter riding gear: the lap apron that attached to your bike and protects your legs, feet and lap from the cold. I much prefer something like a windproof pant.

I have been riding until now and the temperatures are getting a bit brisk especially in the mornings. When I wear jeans I can wear a thin pair of ctton lounge pants underneath and the same for then i dress for work and take the bike in as long as I stick to khakis (which is not always possible for tie and jacket meetings).

I'm much prefer a pair of over-pants that are windproof and preferably, but not necessarily water proof.

Any suggestions on what to get?

I've not started to look yet: I'd like your suggestions before I start.

Thanks gang!

I wear a pair of bib type snow pants. Wind/water proof, zippered near the feet.
I got mine a size larger (No issue slipping because of the over the shoulder straps) and I have my work clothes underneath.
I paid $25 at a Big 5 for basic black

Hi,

I commute in a suit pretty much year round. For what it's worth, I find a basic pair of rain pants works wonders in keeping the wind off, and thus keeping my legs warm. I have been using these:

http://www.motorcyclegear.com/street/closeouts/last_chance_bargains/first_gear/rainman_motorcycle_rain_pants.html

which are right reasonable in price at $37. I find that they are good into the 30's with wool suit pants underneath. Colder than that, I break out a one-piece suit.

Good luck,

-matt

I got a bigger pair of levis and waxed them to make them somewhat windproof. I throw those on in the morning when I do my colder commute. High 40's lower 50's. I wear skinny pants but not freakishly ass hugging Austin, tx hipster skinny jeans .

I picked up a set of Olympia Jacket and Pants for cheap awhile back. They are 2-in-1. One is the outer Armor and abrasion resistant Cordura and it also has an inner. the Inner is almost waterproof and nearly Windproof. the set was sold about $65 new and the inner pant is Fawesome. I also recommend the Vega Jacket. I won mine at the Austin Go to Hell rally, and its my Favorite for what I want to use it for. Both are thin and that makes a big difference.

I go with the folks who say simple, cheap, lightweight rain pants. Provide an excellent wind barrier. When we lived in the States, that's what I wore in the winter. I bought them large enough to fit over my "street" pants. I also found that the most effective "normal" pants in cold weather was corduroy. They were warm and allowed less air through than denim.

Hope you weathered Sandy without too much difficulty.

RE: winter pants
I have winter overpants from FirstGear, the HT model. They have armor, full side zips, and a removable quilted liner. Great for the winter, but not vented for the summer. I have Firstgear mesh overpants for warm weather.

Much as it irks me to recommend BMW you should check out their 'City' range of riding gear at one of their stores. As usual the Germans get it just right.

So I ended up getting a set of Frogg Troggs Tekk Toad pants, and I got a medium, They arrived Monday and I put them on and ordered a small...they seem like they are huge even over jeans ( and not those tight fitting things that look like girls' leggings-type-of-jeans either!).

I'm hoping the small will be a better fit. They do look cool and have a few zippered pockets which is very very handy.

Also picked up a new visor for the helmet Nerd emoticon

I ride all year round, simple cheap rain pants work great and are wind proof, and pack down nicely. Was 29F here this morning, didn't even need to break out the rain pants yet.

Scothguard (or similar(too bad they don't sell cans of "Neverwet" yet))+ leather pants + Thermasilk pantyhose! (no they're not really panyhose but they're very thin... and warm)
Then you don't have to change clothes (or take off winter "over pants"
