I love those Honda Trail 70s. My friend had one when we were kids. I was so jealous.

New to the scooter community, so I just have to ask: What is with the scoots with all the lights clustered in front? Are they actually used at night? Is that legal anywhere? Is there an association between clustered lights and certain groups? Is the number of lights indicative of anything?

An inquiring mind needs to know!

It's related to The Mods.

That link just takes me to Wikipedia's definition of "Mod," and doesn't say anything about lights on a scooter in particular. Sure, the lights are a Mod, but that doesn't help me understand why anyone would do that.

I'm gonna take a guess and say it was the richer kids who could get there hands on them(dads garage leftovers from car accessories).

And yes they are working lights if wired and powered.

Some of these lights that you see on some bikes today are very very very spendy.

So my guess is it is a british thing spawned by their car culture of the day so kids could make there bikes feel like "thier own".

It was all about adding a bit of flash. Some people are like peacocks and like to show off a bit to stand out from the pack. "Look at me, Look at me!" Nothing wrong with it I suppose, especially if you are trying to catch the eye of a certain pretty lady.

I think you are confused about the use of the word "mod" and "Mod."

mod = modification
Mod = People with effed up hair cuts who think the 1960s were something worth remembering.

Sorry to continue the thread jack but from what I have heard the reason Mod's added all the lights was because the authorities were exercising their bureaucratic muscle back in the day in England and as a reaction to the lighting regulations the Mod's added so many freaking lights it was nuts. SO yes it is a Mod thing but there is a reason to the madness.

Very true. The same goes for the multiple rear view mirrors. Initially scooterists did not have them or removed them. So legislation was passed that scooters needed to have at least one mirror on the right side. Well the Mods got mad and decided to retaliate by adding a dozen of them.
