Saw a year-old post asking about occupations.

Thought it might be interesting to ask again and see if people are doing the same or different. Also, as a plus, how about the occupation you would do if you could. Would it be the same as what you do now or different?

Shall we give it a go?

What I do: Army retired, current Army contractor.
What I want to do: Writer/Teacher

What I do: Windows desktop/network support.
What I'd like to do: ride more, work less, get paid and insurance for it.
How likely is that to happen?: Not very.

My title doesn't describe what I really do ( all around IT guy ), Information Systems Architect.

What I would love to do is design / build wooden ships.

Used to be an exhibit designer, semi-pro bicycle racer, commercial art contractor...

Now a part time academic instructor/advisor/department head/grad student at a major university; a dance instructor for a non-profit group I started and a weekend farmer at my house...

Dream job is to lead successful non-violent social and environmental justice revolutions, or at least train others to do so! (am apprenticing in this capacity as of now )

What I do: I am a CPA primarily working as a consultant or contract worker for publicly traded companies in the areas of controllership and SEC reporting.
What I'd like to do: Mechanical engineer.

I was thinking tall ships. Not that they would be practical, but just a lot of fun to design and build.

For twenty two years I was a quality manager in the automotive industry, bearings and pistons and stuff....had enough of that shit!

Starting as plant engineer for an automotive electrical equipment maker tomorrow, nice people, much lower key... wish me luck!

If I could do whatever I want? Hmmmmm, off the cuff I'd like to help Dmpawley build his tall ships and then crew 'em! Avast Matey!

Retired after 32 years teaching French and Spanish in high school. I'm currently thinking about the future, working in some sort of activity between travel and PTW adventures.

I can only imagine the long list of who's pasties you'd want to do first?!!

Would probably be a bundle to test market but there might be a market to those with disposable income and a love for the water to create scaled down but sailable tall ship kits?

Have done: various assistant positions for stop-motion animation (and a bit of 2D as well).

Currently doing: occasionally, when they can actually pay me, I sit in a little novelty gift shop and run the register.

Doing soon: back to Hollyweird for me! Didn't get enough of it the first time around. 8)

Unfortunately, there are a lot of the characteristics of traditional tall ships that are not directly scalable.

A clipper ship directly scaled down to recreational boat size would be lying on its side in the water with the first 10-knot puff of breeze.

You might get close to managing it with a schooner by increasing the beam and the ballast proportionately.

I do consulting, (electronics, frequency control, firmware, monolithics etc.) I'm down to three days a week (have been trying to get down to zero days a week) for the last four years, but the money is great so it's tough to do.

What I would like to do:

Do consulting, zero days a week.

Now: psychotherapist, working with primarily adolescents (have worked with both adults and with children in the past, this is like a nice middle ground).

Would like to be: Doing the same thing, but less. I think my dream is about 15 hours per week, spread across three days.

What I do now : Commercial Photographer.

My dream job would be Commercial Photographer.

If I had to pick another realistic profession it would be home remodeling.
But Retired Photographer would be high up on the list as well.

Metalsmith/Jeweler. I was a gallery director for a number of years, and had my own studio where I did custom work. I had my work represented in some major galleries. Then the economy crashed and I was pretty much wiped out.

I just moved and am getting my studio set up again... and taking the plunge with designing a web-site etc. I also teach metalsmithing at a local community college. Recently I find myself getting into photography again, and using images I have taken in my metal pieces.

Then: Elementary school music specialist and classroom teacher.

Now: Psychotherapist specializing in group therapy. All-around utility guy at home including electrical, plumbing, and wood butchery.

Would like: to be the all-around utility guy, including looking after the psychological well being of the crew, on a Mars mission.

Still doing the same thing as last year (which I can't really discuss publicly), only I now have tenure... so the likelihood of my throwing it over to follow my life long dream of becoming a published writer is pretty much nil.
