I am and have done it since leaving school Gas service technician, service and repair of gas boilers and gas appliances, commercial and domestic. Now self employed

Would like to be retired.

If not then would love my own tea/coffee shop, or high class gift and greeting card shop.

I own 30 franchises that pretty much run themselves.

My wife and I spend most days hanging together just doing stuff; coffee, lunch, walks, movies, going for drives or rides etc. I love my wife and I love my life.

You know, that's interesting. I have often observed that there is so much more inaccurate data than good data that it should be pretty easy to gather it all up thus leaving only the good data. We wouldn't need people to gather good data because it would just be there for anybody to use. You will be a hero.

First I was a marine biologist; it was great fun, but I discovered that you can starve to death being a marine biologist.

Then I spent 20+ years as a developer of medical devices.

Then I joined my wife as a Realtor (tm) and sold real estate.

Then we bought real estate.

Now I sit on real estate in the sun and enjoy life.

My advice to all you young whippersnappers out there is to retire first. You can always work when you are too old to enjoy retirement.

I now run my own training centre for schoolkids that want to learn basic motor mechanics. www.pitstop.org.uk

Would still like to be running it in 10 years time.

Don't know whether you work for the government or for a government contractor (essentially the same thing with lousier benefits), but this favorite quote of mine is likely appropriate regardless:

"The government are very keen on amassing statistics. They collect them, add them, raise them to the nth power, take the cube root and prepare wonderful diagrams. But you must never forget that every one of these figures comes in the first instance from the village watchman, who just puts down what he damn pleases."

You do the Lord's work, my friend. I love my sports chiropractor. He has helped me more than any traditional doctor ever has when it comes to all of my sports owies. People who know how to treat the root problem and not the symptom...I love you guys.

Was an ad copywriter for many years, first working for agencies, then set up my own freelance business. About 20 years ago, started writing product reviews and general articles for firearms publications. Now, semi-retired, still writing, shooting and writing about shooting. I'll keep doing that, and writing off my expenses, until I get carried out feet first.

I am one of the lucky guys, one who was paid for having fun.

I am, was, a Communications Techinician. I could install or repair anything. Only thing I wanted was to fix things. The difference between repair and install is that in repair things used to work, with install you sometimes have to make the impossible work. In 45 years I was never stopped, I aways made it work.

Nowadays, they don't fix anything, just replace. So I retired. Now I get to ride.

Then: Registered Nurse in a level 1 trauma center saving lives but getting paid squat

Now: Sr. Drug Safety Specialist for a biotech/pharma company in SF Bay area. Baby-sitting a drug safety database and writing reports using Cognos. Paid well, but bored off my ass. Definitely unappreciated.

Future: probably more of the same, gotta pay the mortgage.

Dream job: wealthy enough to be a student for life, studying whatever I wanted. Or being able to afford to take 2 years off work to get a nurse practitioner degree so I can go back to direct patient care. Neither is likely to happen as long as I only have my income to rely on.

What I want to do: Teach/coach product managers about user experience.

I also have two design related "dream jobs" that have nothing to do with product management that have been on my wishlist for years. Through a bizarre set of coincidences, I'll be speaking to both of those respective companies in the next week or so about opportunities with them that would start next year. Exciting times.
