Hi. New Vespa owner and new to the forum (hi everyone), hoping somebody out there can give me some advice...picked up a 2003 ET2 (49cc) last week. Bodywork needs some attention but looked a good runner, nice tight throttle, good pull away. Have paper work for new carb Sept 2011. Passed MOT test on Monday with no issues. Added fuel Monday night. Riding 7 miles to work Tuesday started to notice some intermittant power loss on the throttle, would lose revs just for a few seconds before picking up again. Seven hours later on the way home...became more and more frequent. In the end it was so bad I had to stop riding as unsafe. I convinced myself that maybe it was low on 2 stroke oil, so have probably made it worse by filling up with the only 2 stroke oil I could find nearby, which was a cheap multi purpose, this made it instantly more throaty. How can a bike go from happily zipping around to dead on it's feet in the space of a day? Bike starts no problem, just no power on throttle.
I have no expertise with scooters (just ordered manual), and no workshop facilities. Are there any obvious things I can do to resolve this before pushing the bike to my nearest mechanic with a sad look on my face?

Hi Olsen,
I had loads of problems too with mine -2001 ET2 when i first got it, I ended up changing the battery, new carb, number of spark plugs, air filters etc etc, I finally gave up and took it to a local bike garage who told me the barrell and piston was knackered?? I took it back to the guy i had bought it from as I had only had it a couple of months and he sorted it free of charge. I have done some more modifications over the past 2 years basically for a bit more speed but nothing major
I havent had any problems since really, just yearly changes, bulbs, air filter occasional tyre etc.
Can you look into the barrell and piston issue or take it somewhere to have a butchers?
I have a manual that you are more than welcome to borrow, although your quite a trek away. lol
Keep us posted, and get some pictures on here.
Welcome from the West Midlands

Thanks Sparky. I have decided to bite the bullet and wheel it up to a bike shop (only a few miles!!). I would rather lay out some cash now to get it up and running properly while I get to grips with the ongoing maintenance. I will mention the barrell and piston issue. Any idea what it might cost to get that sorted? Thanks for the offer on the manual but I ebayed one Monday night, so hopefully here tomorrow.

ah, good on ya. No idea whatsover on barrell and piston, mentioned I wasnt happy he had sold me a duff bike and something about dislocation and legs ha ha and he fixed it for me. Ebay "Barrell and piston Et2" and then add £50-£100 quid for labour depending on how well you know the mechanic
I got my manual off ebay too, although had such a good deal on it, think it cost more to post than I won it for. Bloomin heavy thing!
Definatly good idea to fork out few quid first, get the beast on the road, then its all plain sailin..
Keep us posted!

Did the oil light come on? Does it come on, before starting it? It could be a lot of things....electric or fuel or air.....
I would drain that oil....and buy some good scooter oil....Just don't put any air bubbles in the line.....
Check the spark plug for spark, and check the carb to see if it's all connected...Check the air filter to see how dirty it is, and clean it.....
It could be a lot of things, besides lack of oil....
Do the cheap stuff first.....and get a compression check to see if the cylinder is toast....

I agree with greg531. Check the simple stuff first. 2 strokes are notorious for fouling spark plugs if you idle very much or putt around at low rpms. They need to be revved out quite frequently. I would have a new spark plug on hand and check that first. It wouldn't hurt to carry a spare with you at all times.

Hi everyone, thanks for the advice, absolutely brilliant. Bike shop just called and says it is electrical (wiring) and all sorted for £45.....doesn't entirely stack up in my head, but let's see. I will work through all your advice though and change spark, check filters and carb etc and start on some of the body work issues.
