A guy is selling this locally on CL. http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/mcy/3394583009.html It looks like it replaces the stock fuel cap. I'm not considering buying it, just thought it was kinda cool. Anyone know the history on these, like who made them and when?

They were made in the '50s as an aftermarket accessory. They are pretty rare and valuable today. Cool mechanism too. the float rides on two posts on either side with a flat twisted rod that rides through the middle. As the float moves down it forces the twisted rod to turn which, in turn, is connected to the needle on the dial.

That is just cool. Want. The amount of times I go looking in the tank to see if I can eek out enough fuel to get me to the station because I couldn't be bothered to just fill up when I hit reserve.

I don't see an advantage to it. You have to dismount and open the seat to see how much fuel you have. One simple step further is like someone said, opening the cap and taking a peek. I thought the idea of a fuel gauge was to see it within the control panel on the headset as your riding.

Upon digging a little further, it appears it costs considerably less to buy only one:

I contacted the guy selling the gauge to get more information about it. The next thing I know, it's sitting in my living room. The thing is pretty cool and it looks like you can see the gauge face when in the saddle. I don't know if I'll actually use it, but it's definitely a conversation piece.
Here I am gathering all this stuff and my scoot is still in pieces. Am I becoming a parts hoarder now? |
