I've had my Fly 125 just over a year now, and always ride with the top box on (it's one of the reasons I chose the Fly, as it came with a coloured coded top box as standard in the UK).

Today though I needed to move more stuff and rather than repack into the top box, I removed it and just kept the rear rack to bungee on to.

Riding without the top box, the Fly felt so much better! Much more nimble and agile, even a little quicker perhaps. Even with my heavy bag bungee'd on it still felt a lot better handling wise.

I'm at a loss to explain this, the Piaggio top box weights very little, and although bulky I cannot see why it would affect handling so much - some weird areodynamics perhaps?

Now I have a problem... I keep the top box on all the time as I do use the scooter as a 2nd car replacement, and carry quite a bit for work, but really 8/10 days I don't need it. Perhaps a fabric bag to store under the seat until needed is the way to go (and I rather like the look of the scoot with no top box and just the rack).

Hmmm....

Does the box remove easily?

I've got a top box for my MP3, it usually only goes on once a week for running errands. Its two seconds to remove as it unlatches from the rack via the key. I like the look of the bike without the box and yes, the handling can be a little wierd with it in place.... I think it acts like a sail hanging out there in the wind! So its under the seat storage use for me!

It should come off fairly easily. Why not leave it off when you don't need it. I don't like top cases. Have a rear rack on mine but i don't use it much. I have bags in my pet carrier and use the step thru. The only problem with that is where you live. Seems like it's been raining for years there. Good luck.

Thanks folks, yes it attaches simply via one bolt, takes 20s to remove.

Problem is my load carrying is random, not regular shopping days.

I do think a sturdy canvas type bag is on the Christmas list tho... And the Piaggio top box lock is singly awful to use sadly.

Oh judy it's not rained years. Decades perhaps, maybe the odd aeon...

i had a 100cc fly, with a topbox on and it that too seemed a lot nicer ride and more nimble without box on,
so i took it off unless i needed it,

And Judy, its still raining here now

That's one reason I like the Givis though the Piaggio topbox on the BV 500 has the same feature as the Givis. Once button to remove the topbox. I keep mine on all the time but when traveling it is lovely to pop it off and take the lockable case into the hotel with me.

My Vespa had a topbox(trunk) on it when I purchased it used. I kept it on there for about a year. After seeing pictures on here of all the naked( ) Vespas I decided they look better without the topbox so I removed mine. I does look better and seems to handle better but that may be my imagination.
