This is about a 2005 Vespa ET2 (50 cc, 2 stroke)

Any idea where to start?

Problems:
Battery 8V with both engine running and not = no charging
Oil level light on, flicker a bit, but the reservoir is full
Gas 1/2, but full tank
Side indicators don't work, horn hardly work

My guess:
a. Voltage regulator bad
b. Stator / alternator bad
c. Cables short circuit

Any idea where to start with the diagnostics?

I would suggest charging the battery until it is full, then recheck the electrics to see if that temporarily fixes things.

These problems could stem from the stator if you can't charge the battery correctly. I would check the stator output to see where that is at...

There's a Wiki on how to use a multimeter if that helps, also do a search here, you never know what you might find?

I hooked up Vespa to my car, the oil lamp problem is gone (so it must be voltage sensitive)
Did some checks on the regulator, appears bad. Voltage for the stator is in 35V range.
Perhaps I will be able to fix it...

Observation: I called Blackfoot Motors, they claim I need regulator part 58096R, but it looks different, and I believe I have part 82587R. I start to believe they don't care much about Vespas (especially after selling me API5 oil for the end gear.)

The big question: is there any Vespa mechanic in Calgary who knows the brand?

Did you ever solve this problem? I realize this is an old post but I am now experiencing a similar problem and I wondered if it turned out to be the voltage regulator and if you were able to order the correct one successfully from Blackfoot motor sports ( I'm from Calgary too ). I have used All Season Motorsports for repairs with reasonably good results.
