Want to paint my bike fire engine red.
Want something different than red.
What's the difference between candy and pearl?

Metallic, candy and pearl are all the same thing. The size of the flake is the difference, in decending order, pearl being the finest and most subtle.
Red... But different than red? My head hurts... |

Metallic has small flakes in it.
Candy is a transparent tinted finish that is applied over a colored base coat. Example- candy red over silver base provides a very nice bright red finish. Put candy red over gold, and it becomes a darker richer look- more of a candy brandywine. Candy red over black, and you'll have a black finish that gives off red accents where light reflects off it. I'm not aware of any metallic flakes in candy, where they are usually seen is that folks will use a very heavy metalflake base coat then put the candy on top (much like the get coat finish you see on really garish bass boats). Pearl- has a shimmering effect- early pearl finishes used crushed abalone shell. Now it's synthetic. Pearls can be top coated with other colors to give off multi color looks. Pearls also have the interesting result of changing color when light moves past it. Some of these finishes are referred to as 'flip flop'. A really nice finish can be achieved by using a silver or gold base coat and doing accents underneath with another color (gold or black) to create a shading effect, much like the look of the 70s BMW R90s. |

thx dabears.
I think what I was trying to say is I'm looking for a real bright red( like a fire truck). However, I want something different that makes it stand out. I have a silver metal flaked Li150, and am thinking of using a candy or pearl as a finish. Wasn't sure of the difference, but now I do! Cheers |
