May today be a meaningful time of reflection. I know I'll be thinking about friends with whom I served... Some still with us, and some not.
Thank you for your service.

Nice sentiment Trep. We've got a traveling version of "the wall" here right now. I think I'll go up in the morning, look at my friends names there, and think about them for a while.

Marky-
11.11 has a slightly different meaning in the US. In the US, Veterans Day, 11 Nov, gives recognition to all who served. Originally called "Armistice Day" (1926) to commemorate the end of WWI and in hope and promotion of world peace. The observance was changed in intent in 1954 to honor all veterans. By 1890, for all the Northern States, well before the establishment of "Armistice Day", the US observed "Decoration Day". Named for the practice of decorating the graves of fallen military with flowers and flags. This was originally set as May 30, but is now the last Monday in May and is now officially called "Memorial Day". Unfortunately, the US observes nothing as solemn and dignified as "Remembrance Day". To my fellow veterans, regardless of period of service or nation, my best wishes for a peaceful day. |

I like the following quote (often attributed to Winston Churchill): Quote: "We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm." Those who serve in the military are trained to do things that in civilian life would be considered capital crimes. Those who train these soldiers, hold them at the ready and judiciously loose them to do their duty, bear an awesome responsibility. For me, veterans day is as much about honoring the individual men and women who serve(d) in the military, as it is about honoring a type of society that gives government a monopoly on the use of force... and instills in that government the wisdom to use that force only when absolutely required.

Veteran, yes.
Warrior Race, no. "Rough", not really. War is such a waste. You would think our species could evolve beyond the need to conquer one another. God (yes, I am a believer) Bless you fellow vets out there. Unfortunately there still is a need for those services. |

My grandfather served in the Pacific during the second world war, and the Iwo Jima reunion memorial always springs to mind:
Quote: On the 40th anniversary of the battle of Iwo Jima, American and Japanese veterans met again on these same sands, this time in peace and friendship. We commemorate our comrades, living and dead, who fought here with bravery and honor, and we pray together that our sacrifices on Iwo Jima will always be remembered and never be repeated. |

The US Veterans Administration offers that today was originally set aside by Congress as follows:
Quote: The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words: Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples. An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday-a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." My enlistment in the U.S. Navy ended in September of 1969 and many people in the USA were not very nice to members of the military. I learned quickly to just say nothing about ever serving in the military for many years. Fortunately, that eventually changed to a large degree and now most people don't blame the members of the military for the wars and skirmishes that are created by the politicians. I have never regretted the three years of active duty that I served.

Having served in the USAAF and then the USAF from'42 to '64, in both enlisted grades and commissioned ranks, and then retired, I tend to look upon myself as more a "Lifer" than a veteran.

In 2007 I was medically evacuated from Afghanistan. I had significant internal problems (illness) but flew on the C-5 with all evacuees. One of the kids on the flight was a quad amputee. When we arrived at Ramstien, we were loaded to move to Landstuhl. My wife met me at the hospital.
The quad amputee was unconscious (drugged), and was left outside as the medical crew was moving patients in and out, leaving this kid sitting outside - he shuddered in reaction to the cold. My wife wife grabbed an NCO and told him to move that kid inside. He gave her some lip, and she said "I may not be his mother, but I am a mother, now get your ass over there and get that kid inside." "Yes, ma'am!" Was the only thing the NCO said, and he grabbed a crew and moved the kid inside. I was never so proud of my wife as at that moment. Thank you veterans for your service. And thanks to families who sacrifice to support their Vets! May we come to a time when war is obsolete, but until then, thanks to all those who serve.

My thanks to all who have served, especially those who have put their country above themselves to serve the greater good.
Grew up a bit cynical during VietNam, but have a deep feeling for what those who have served have risked and often endured, and sometimes continue to. As much as I hate war, I'm a pragmatist, and hope we can keep it rare, and keep our purpose and ethics high. One can always wish... |

Well. Of course were not a warrior race. We only spend those enormous amounts of money on defense, investing in weapons technology, and training our finest youths in the martial arts, because of the threats posed by aliens, Godzilla, and zombies. I knew that!
God bless our veterans, every one! |
