Noob here..just came into a good used GT200...I was wondering if anyone has a line on local oil filters. You would think the major players like Fram, Purolator, Wix, Delco and the like would make something very close to what we have and would be more accessible instead of having to order online and pay shipping and what not.

I did look at the same question in '08 on this forum and the answers were Champion-Maiossi-Athena and those types that just aren't readily available in my neck of the woods...oh yeah forgot about HiFlo. I did order one from Amazon that matched the one that was on the scoot (Piaggio aftermarket) and if push comes to shove I reckon I'll just mozey on down to the local parts store and do some comparin'. Googlin' most of the time doesn't even show Vespa or Piaggio on the lists....grrr.

tazmo,
Google up "PSN Tuning" in the UK. You can order a kit for the GT200 containing a drive belt, a set fo rollers, an oil filter, and a spark plug, all of which you will need. They will be delivered to your front door by USPS in about seven days and at an exceptionally nice total cost.

Try: www.powersportsuperstore.com. I think you want HF183

5 bucks each, I bought 5 as I'm breaking in a new scoot.

Oil Filters
Well it sure would be nice to amble on down to a local spot and forget about the postman if you get my drift. Knowing that hard to find stuff is easier to Google an all y'all. It it my mind just seems that there should or would be something as common as oil filters would be as easy to get your hands on as oil seems to be these days...funny how synthetic is about as much as dino.

GT200 stuff
No offense but the standard of living down in this neck of the woods isn't as high as it is elsewhere. Nine bucks for an oil filter is almost outrageous and over a hundred bucks for a piece of rubber with kevlar in it is almost sacraligeous, it kind of defeats the idea of owning a scooter to start with doesn't it.

Maybe I'm gettting off on the wrong foot but geeze paying through the nose to upkeep a well made thing is anti-productive when the idea is to save money. Live and learn I reckon.

Tazmo, if there is a local ma&par motorcycle shop in your neck of the woods, I bet they can order you one for five or six bucks and save some shipping. That's what I do.

'gt200 stuff' fits lots of vespas...
if you go to scooterwest.com (one of our sponsors) you can see that lots of consumables readily fit many models.
lots to learn young owner

since your scooter is getting on a bit in age. these things are something you may need to check out/service/replace.
spark plug
petrol lines
battery
all fluids
tyres(just wait till you find out how long those last!)

in the 2 years of owning mine, i've done those things and more...ownership isn't necessarily a 'cost of living' lowering situation. you'll get more distance for fuel burned than your PU truck, and that's about it...except for the sheer fun of riding...and that, our new friend, is a priceless gift...enjoy.

wish i had a scooter when i lived in the upstate, there are some really nice roads to ride there.

Yup. Feel like a dumbass for even asking. Just one of those things ya gotta find out for yourself I reckon'.
Another funny thing I noticed was it (the bike) calls for a 12v-12ah battery but for some reason it came with a 12v-6ah...there goes another can of worms.
Thanks guys and Happy Turkey Day. I know one thing, if anything, answers around here come fast and furious. You guys are a hoot.

TAZ they ain't cheap to fix. The stock muffler is almost 500 to replace. Wha? emoticon They are beautiful machines tho. MotorSportScooters will have everything you need and it gets there quickly. PSN has some good deals as well. Try living on the remotest island in the world? While we have looks of scooters here, their mostly cheap Chinese crap. Good luck with your oil change and do change out your lines. Clear one disintegrate ove time. Tubing can be obtained at any auto store. Check the Wiki section on here if you need help. Step by step instructions and some have videos. Oh before i forget:Aloha and welcome to the forum. Good luck.

tasmo,
When you reported that PSN did not have what you needed, I was about to tell you to email them for info. I knew what they had because I have two GT200s and get service kits from always.

What I was doing was entering the query wrong. I asked for a GT200 kit and it would kick it back but when I entered 200 service kit it went right to it. You guys are right that is a good deal and those guys are prompt, within several hours I got an email saying that it was shipped. Can't beat that. Thanks to all of y'all for that one.

I'm still going to be on the look out for a local brand oil filter though, as luck would have it a friend dropped by going on errands and I noticed he had and oil filter for his van and it looked a lot like one that would work out, an STP S2, if and when I do find one that is suitable I'll post it. What I'm going to do is wait until I receive the one's I've ordered then take 'em down to the auto parts store and do a visual and come up with something that's compatible. What the heck right.

Your quest for a common interchange filter is nothing new. It has been researched time and time again without success. The HF183, I believe is about the only aftermarket filter for a Vespa engine. Finding something that "Looks the same" or "This should work" doesn't mean it is the specification to properly protect the engine. After so many years of the Piaggio/Vespa engine being in use, the odds of a common new filter suddenly becoming available are very slim.

I was afraid of that. I was going to make sure the thread width, diameter, O ring, filtration holes and all of that sort of thing matched up before taking the plunge for sure. I do agree that the HiFlo 183 looks like the best bet. Found a two pack for about 15 bucks delivered.
