I spent 2 years in Finland back in the mid eighties. There they have a tradition called "Avanto" which translated means literally "hole in the ice". We would go to a cottage next to a lake or river and cut a 5x5ft hole in the ice. Next we would get into the sauna and warm up, run outside, and jump into the water. When it is -40C the water is much warmer than the air and snow. Get out of the water and run back to the sauna to warm up. I did this 2 winters in a row.

I've never did an "official" polar bear event, but in Cub and Boy Scouts we had a Polar Bear swim every morning at Summer camp. Usually there was steam rising from the pool and sometimes they'd throw in a bunch of ice blocks to make it chillier. It was actually warmer in the pool than outside, but was very cold getting out.
The favorite part for the kids was staying in the warm showers. It was really hard getting them out since leaders are, of course not allowed in their shower area. Usually we'd send in one of the senior scouts in to roust them out. Good times.
An event looked forward to here. Typically a fund raiser for charity these days. Did it once somewhere around 1970-71. The rush was very similar to my heart attack in 2007. Definitely an eye opener. The exit is probably the quickest movement one will make in a lifetime.
When I was in the Navy.... We were doing exercises with the Canucks EOD in Esquimalt.... We would run and jump in the bay (naked) and run back as fast as we could for the Sauna/shower...
It sure let you know you were alive.
