I'm having my cvt cover shot blasted and powder coated as it has suffered from aluminium corrosion (with subsequent coating blistering).

The cover is off but I think I should remove the rear spindle bearing before shot lasting and power coating. I don't want to experiment here, I just want the bearing out in the best way! I have removed the circlip and I am ready to roll!

I would imagine that heating the case in the oven would be a help as the coefficient of expansion of the case is likely to be greater than that of the bearing.

Is it sensible to reuse the bearing after heating and removal or is this a MUST REPLACE item?

I appeal to the voice of experience!

They are cheap enough - and they do wear gradually anyway, so I'd replace anyway.

So heat it up, drift it out and replace after the powder coat?

You might be able to drift it out without heating the case, but the heat will make it easier. You pretty much have to replace any bearing you drift out, as doing so (theoretically) ruins the bearing.

Not sure if heating the whole thing in the oven will work. If both parts are exposed to the same heat, they will both expand. The only question then is whether the aluminum expands more than the steel, which I do not know.

I would use a propane torch on the case. No, actually, I would just use my 20-ton press. But that's a different story.

Is there anything you don't have in your garage? How do people think of Christmas presents for you?

Oh, there are lots of things I don't have for my workshop yet. CNC mill, lathe, welder, and so on.

That's a bit of a problem for my family, yes.

Aluminium expandes faster then steel, if you do not own a press this is the way to go.

If you happen to have a big enough oven you can place it in there or else with a torch but then you have to be very careful.

Bearing needs te e replaced btw.

And wives dearly love to come home to the smell of engine cases cooking in their oven!

They especially love how the 'eau de crankcase can hang about for a week as well.... No, really! Honest!

However it is best to have a sleeping bag set up in the gargae so you can sleep out there with the Vespa. You know you wanted to anyway!

Should just drift out carefully with a socket

This should be the correct bearing
