I made mashed sweet potatoes with butter, cinnamon, cloves and brown sugar and took in to the Thanksgiving dinner we went to. Of the 10 adults there, 2 where American, the rest German. I don't think any of the Germans, except for me, had any sweet potato, not even to try. Germans think potatoes need to be salty to taste good.... their loss, more for me!!!!

Welcome to the south. I grew up in North Carolina and that dish showed up everywhere. Some of them were a gummy mess. Others were light and fluffy. I make the light and fluffy kind.

We have had the sweet potato with marshmallow on top. The family get together was at my brother's house with everyone bringing something. But, no sweet potato this year. It was my only disappointment in a fine day of family fun.

Sweet potato or yams with marshmellow topping...just so they turn a little in color and you're done. Perhaps some chopped walnuts...it's a good sweet / desert that goes good with coffee.

I'll also take a good piece of pumpkin cupcake with some whipped cream and maybe some chopped walnuts.

Pecans, that's what you have with pumpkin, sweet potatoes and yams. Walnuts go with apples and chocolate. Of course pecans go well with chocolate as well since almost everything goes well with chocolate.

It was my first time trying sweet potato casserole too...I found it too sweet, but I loved the toasted marshmallows on top.

... but I usually like things that others don't. No hard feelings.

I'm one of those Southerners that can't stomach the Sweet Potatoes with Marshmellows thing. My mother still makes them for many dinners, including Thanksgiving. What always had me scratching my head is when I decline a spoonful, she always still seems surprised and then shakes her head and says, "but they are really so good for you."

Another sort of over-the-top sweet thing my parents have eaten since I was a kid is that they serve regular white rice with a glob of butter and then sprinkle regular sugar on top of that! Ahhhh-still can't get that past my nose! Anyone else do this? I've never seen another family serve white rice with butter and sugar and as a vegetable-not a dessert!

I have to add here that my sweet potato dish is not overly sweet. Just a bit.

And thanks for the heads up Bob, now I know what I will not be making if you ever come over...

Cut the sugar way down, use brown now white sugar and sweet potatoes are good but too many people put in about 3x the amount of sugar they should and generally don't put in enough cinnamon and other spices.
FWIW, as a kid we'd have the white rice with butter and sugar but that was desert not veg.

I was glad there was not too much sugar in. I also made the gravy for my host and ensured it was extra savoury to counteract the sweetness

She also did a green bean casserole topped with crisp onions. V good

I made turkey and vegetable broth for her before I left ... Lots of pearl barley in there too.. Her husband just called and said they were ticking in now and they loved it
