While perusing SIP the other day, I was surprised to see they're recommending LML case halves as replacements or even as an upgrade for the PX, citing the advantages of the reed valve over the rotary one.

Has anyone ever tried doing this?

I personally like the LML cases because of their reed valve set up and porting for the LML 5 port top end, which I find much superior to the outdated 3 port Piaggio cylinder.

Better gas mileage and torque from the LML set up.

I would never say they are an "upgrade."

The casting of those compared to piaggio. . . There is no comparison. Piaggio cases are casted so much better. The Malossi are machined to a better degree than the Piaggio units.

As far as the case transfers, you can always make transfers as big as you want by welding them up. I have yet to meet a case I didn't weld up for Go Fast setups.

As far as reed vs. rotary, well I am a rotary guy. We all live and die by our opinions.

I bought mine from Scooter-Center Koln via their ebay store. They have fixed-price shipping (29 euro to AUS) which is the same for a washer or an engine. I bought it after riding a friends who bought a whole 2010 LML very cheaply... most stuff fell apart but the motor is very good. He swapped all his good gear in, leaving the gearbox. It did 113km/h before some more fettling which resulted in higher speeds that he hasn't checked with GPS. Quite large transfers already, no welding was needed for his Polini 177 setup. Neither of us have had any casting problems.

If you decide to go this way be aware that the layshaft is larger for the LML where it enters the fly side case... so it needs to be bushed to fit the Piaggio layshaft.

More confirmation
Interesting info on this subject here PX 166cc Enhanced Durability Engine

They seem to have a high opinion of the LML casings, if not their internals,

More useful discussion in the Sprint/bitch thread(Nice Sprint has LML power)

if you're buying just the cases, get a Malossi-built P200 case. they're using the old molds to make new cases.

other than that, LML cases are great. the parts (crank, bearings, rubber) they put into them are junk.

(edited for typo)

Hey Saturn.. do you mean Polini? or the Malossi cases?
I'm just asking because I know of the Malossi cases (which are supposed to be fantastic) but I didn't know about Polini. just axin'

Hey V... have you seen opinions on the LML case(s) on the German scooter forums?

I know they use them.. I haven't read any complaints about the case.. For what it's worth... the SIP racer (w/ the 12" wheels).. the motor is built using LML case. I totally agree with what's been said already.. The internals not so good but the case itself seems to be good stuff. I haven't heard one story (but then I haven't read every page of every thread) about something being wrong with those cases... and I've had 2 and have not had any problem with the cases.

So, if one wanted to repair a PX that had bad cases, what all would that entail? New crank (uncut I suppose). Anything else?

The complaints I hear seem to be people saying Indian=bad, therefore LML is no good. But I think the cases are good stuff. I have a mate who has an older rotary valve LML case, mid-level tune that has been going strong for some years now, no complaints.

Swap all your px gear into the LML. However be aware that the fly-side has a larger brass bushing for the end of the layshaft... you'll need to replace the shaft within the gears/xmas tree. And you need a reed and block.
