I saw this last night: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjEuF_sqiQE

I've been caught in edge traps before when riding my bicycle. That's fairly common for riders who get too close to a curb. But I never got caught in one on a motorcycle or scooter. What happens is the front wheel comes up against a raised edge that prevents it from turning in either direction. Essentially, the front wheel is locked in position. The rider cannot initiate a turn in either direction. The bike quickly loses balance and falls over.

In the video the rider gets trapped by an edge of pavement left by a work crew repairing the shoulder of the road. Watch the rider drift off to the right across the fog line. Then he runs into the repair area with the edge. He's trapped! It must be about a 2 inch edge. You can see the bike in front of the camera roll over it at 17 seconds, frame -06:00. This is a scary and highly instructional video. Be careful out there!

I had this happen on my mountain bike 13 months ago, merging from dirt back onto pavement at night - there was a 1" lip I went over regularly and it was 2" instead of 1" just a bit to the left, but I couldn't see that riding quickly in the dark. I went right over the bars and woke up bleeding profusely with broken ribs, cracked helmet, etc. and enjoyed a night in the ER. Ride carefully kids.

Ow! Edges like these also occur within or between lanes when road crew are repaving roads or when the ground shifts and creates unevenness. Hope the guys is okay.

wow - i hope he is ok --

yeah they can show up pretty much everywhere -- but usually where there are at least two different pours of concrete --- in some cases not only construction issues - but also drought or too much rain can raise one side due to the soil or contracting or expanding -

be very careful out there --- i was the MP3 rider that Sticky mentioned above[/u]
