Now that my footpeg brackets are ordered, now I have to decide what kind of peg to get.

For those of you you have them, what type did you get?

If you may recall, I wear Ridiculously Tall Platform Boots in order to reach the ground on my 400. Am I better off with a broader type peg I can plant my foot on, or a long skinny peg that will basically fit in the notch between the heel and the ball of the foot?

You're asking two different questions.

1. What do I have? I have the JC Whitney ellipticals. I like that they have a broad surface that contacts a generous portion of the sole of my foot (meaning, usually, sneaker, yeah yeah I already know all the arguments) and I can adjust the angle of that. That's important to me, because if I put a thin-soled shoe (like a sneaker, yeah, yeah I know) on a point contact then I get a cramp after a while because the sole flexes around that point.

2. What do I recommend for you specifically? I *seriously* doubt that those boots are going to have flex issues of any sort (say the way a sneaker does, yeah yeah I know). If point contact is not an issue, then a round peg has the distinct advantage of being perfectly aligned with your sole no matter what position your foot is in. So for example you can ride with your toe on the peg, with the peg in the nook in front of the heel, or with your heel on the floorboard and the toe on the peg. No matter what, your sole is tangential to the peg.

P.S. afterthought. I suspect that a round, rubber-covered peg that is in the nook of those boots and in simultaneous contact with both the sole of the boot and the front surface of the heel is the very definition of "firmly planted."

Mine are "roundish" "ovalish" ones that are wide.
i don't think I would like the flat ones, because I move my foot around too much.
Sometimes I have the back of my heel on the front of the peg to stretch out, sometimes just my toes, and sometimes I have it in the nook of the boots like rjeffb mentioned.
I have no idea the name of my pegs, so cannot help you there.

I think if you put a round peg in the "notch" in those boots, you'll find your heel will be the first thing to touch down on cornering. Mine does occasionally and I have regular heels.

PS: Did I see you in the lab on NCIS in those boots?

Yeah your heel will definitely touch first with almost any peg...even an elliptical. Mine does and I don't have much of a heel on my boot. Not a bad thing if you are anticipating it and don't freak.

If you search someone had these mini floor board pegs which might be better but I have not used them.

Yes. You guys are right. Your heel will touch in some turns.
Luckily I have ground down the heels on my boots enough in the twisties, that I don't notice it much now! Razz emoticon

Yeah, as short as my legs are, I can envision using the top "wrung".

I was also considering getting the Fehling crash bars sometime next year - would the rear set get in the way of the foot peg brackets?

That may very well interfere with the peg ear of the UFP. At the very least, the bumper will likely have to be moved (look up my post int he main UFP thread called "coming up short").

I am unfamiliar with that device - is it all one single piece? Not only does there appear to be possible interference, but it sure looks like it uses the same anchor screw point as the UFP's forward slot and that could conceivably preclude mounting both together. I think this thing deserves its own thread - anybody have personal experience with it?

BTW the UFP was never designed to be a crash bumper and I make not claim that like a crash bumper, it can protect you bodywork in a spill - but some others here might beg to differ based on their reports.

i have these foot pegs from JC WHITNEY and due to their heaviness, it tends to do some damage to anything that may put contact to your scoot. i wouldnt use any other foot peg than these.

Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts and suggestions. I think the thing to do is put the brackets on first then sit on the bike with my boots on, perhaps with a dowel rod in the different holes to see where my foot lands in the extended position.

The ellipticals look like the way to go for me - wide enough to plant the ball of my foot but narrow enough to fit in the notch in the sole. I tend to shift position constantly (ask anyone who sits next to me in church) so I don't think a mini floorboard would work.

Most of the roads in NW Ohio are pretty straight, so I don't anticipate much dragging. Should I get on some twisties, chances are I won't have my feet out on the pegs, anyway.

Thanks again!

http://www.jcwhitney.com/emgo-universal--mount-elliptical-rail-foot-pegs/p2002575.jcwx?filterid=c14710u0j1

They're listed as "rail mount" - will they work on the brackets?

Yes - you throw away the straps that attach themto a "rail" and you get a shorter, fully threaded 3/8" screw to replace the shoulder screw that came with the pegs. One note, JCW sometimes runs those on sale.

Kind of funny how everyone seems to be running with these, my self included. I've run with these for 2 years now and no problems. Not even any rust that can show up after a few years on cheaper products.

A fine peg for a UFP, but too long for a UPP, as a passenger putting their feet out at the end could overstress the U-channel underneath. Provided that passengers keep their feet inboard, not an issue; but a short peg prevents the opportunity for a problem from ever coming up.

Normal riding position - they're kind of angular but they work good. I'm thinking I might like the rounder ones with rubber inserts better for resting my ankles.

Seconded, I have the same pegs but I have the chrome, because black was out of stock for several weeks when I ordered. Excellent pegs, and they have the full range of adjustments that a lot of the less expensive pegs seem to lack.

Thirded-ed-ed--- really a nice peg for looks, grip, and adjustability.

I went with these for the front, ordered throught East Bay Motorsports in Hayward, CA. I got them for about $53.00 or so and had to wait for their arrival, pick them up in person.

For my UPP rears, I ordered them for $52 off Amazon.com with no tax and free shipping. I plan on shortening them up a couple inches like Sanogeo1 did. (disassemble, amputate two rungs and bolt by use of a metal bladed bandsaw, reassemble) I will post up pics after I do it.

Cheers,

Steve H/B

Hi Ruby, I completely missed your question - sorry!

I bought these on Amazon, and they are NOT motorcycle boots - they're Goth costume boots. They're made well enough - haven't fallen apart yet - but they aren't as sturdy as my Harley boots that are made for riding.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000YQXSL8/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These have about a 3.25" heel; the platform under the ball of the foot is about 2.5", so they aren't technically high heel. It took me forever to find any kind of platform boot that wasn't also high heel! I almost had to resort to men's boots.

Only complaint is that the rings will spin on the pegs when they get wet. That allows your foot to slip. Generally, I don't use them when the weather is less than clement.

At the end of the peg is an allen screw; loosen that and the peg rotates, tighten it and the peg locks into position. The peg (which is not round, but roughly triangular) can therefore be positioned independently of the hinge location; the hinge portion can be positioned parallel to the bracket ear to optimize folding (safety), and the peg surface positioned parallel to the sole of the rider's foot (comfort).

Note that the JCW elliptical pegs can be similarly adjusted independently.

Thanks for the response Jeff. I figured since the pegs are mounted in a round hole the adjustment range was already infinite. Given that my curiosity was peaked by the earlier statement, thought maybe there was a new twist to it I hadn't noticed. [Pun? Um, sort of I guess. ]

I decided to take the plunge and ordered a new set of foot pegs & clevis mounts to replace the Drag Specialties I now have. They're wider and I think they'll be more comfortable for my big fat feet; expect them to arrive in a few days. I seem to be spoiling myself.... Wha? emoticon

Larry, did you see the pegs that Planejane bought? (the very last photo in the footpeg FAQs at MP3 Footpeg Brackets - SOLD OUT)
