Mine originated as a miss-spelling of "Abuelo", or "grand father" in Spanish. There are a number of "grandfathers" in our family, so I chose a miss-spelling form, AKA "Abuello"

I grew up in Hawaii. Since I was little Kid, I was known as "that Haole kid" or "Haole" or "Haole C".
Haole is the Hawaiian word for white person. And depending on the tone and inflection, it could be a negative or a descriptive.
It's always been a nickname, even now at 51 my old friends still use it.
