Lothar,
I thought of that too, but it's been raining around here and I haven't been motivated to lay down and have a look at it yet. Some time back, when I last replaced that "sleve", I made a "Barrier Ring" that I clamped to the header pipe, using a hose clamp, to keep the sleve from being blown out from between the two pipes. Maybe that has screwed up.
It has been suggested that I install a solid bushing instead of the graphited sleve, but I feel that that would stress the exhaust pipe attaching studs in the cylinder head possibly causing a rather difficult repair if one of the studs were to break.
I feel that the sleve provides an expansion joint that is necessary in view of the way the muffler is mounted so solidly and thermal expansion must be considerable between the parts.
After having an LV pipe without the soft packing on my GTS, Ive come to agree about the expansion capabilities of the graphite joint. Its really the only shock and expansion absorbing portion of the entire exhaust system and probably the best engineering compromise available.
