On the '78P that I recently rebuilt, I was telling a buddy about the clutch problem I was having prior, and he told me that to make sure the holes from the back plate and the pressure plate were aligned. This fixed the problem. Another friend of mine was telling me about the same problem he was having and i stated to him how mine was resolved. It worked for him too. Can someone tell me the explanation or reasoning for why this works?

I'm not saying that your clutch had a problem and now doesn't, but it most likely has nothing to do with aligning the holes in the basket and the spring plate.

I'll point out that not all Vespa clutches have those holes.

It is a case of waving the dead chicken...

Taking it apart and reassembling it fixed a problem you did not see before taking it apart.

It sounds like one of the following two things:

Stuck plates, which were fixed by dis-assembly

Trapped springs: the springs can fail to set themselves fully in the cups, and if one or more are not fully seated you get uneven tension on the plates. When you stack everything, they line up, then when you compress it they actually rotate a few degrees. Sometimes they fail to seat properly.

I use a small screwdriver to get in there and make sure they are fully seated after assembly.

Rg....That's what I figured myself. I thought by taking it out and reseating everything did the trick, but aligned the holes just to be sure. I saw some sites online like scooterhelp that suggested to line them up, but it was only a suggestion. Nowhere did I read about why and reasonings for doing so, which is why I thought I would ask here.
